International Nurses Week celebrated
Chandigarh, May 19
The valedictory programme was organised at Nivedita Hostel. Ms Surinder Jaspal, Registrar, Punjab Nurses Registration Council, was the chief guest and Prof A.K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent, was the guest of honour. During the week, the patients and their attendants were made aware of the dangers of substandard and fake drugs. A talk on the role of nurses in the prevention and control of hospital acquired infection and best practices of intravenous therapy was also added to programme. |
Talk on reproductive health

Kwatra, Medical Officer, PU Health Centre, emphasised that real empowerment of women meant that she had control over her reproductive rights, that she
could decide when to have children, spacing between two children, and other decisions related to it. She told the participants about various healthy practices ensuring healthy and long life for the mother and child, including anti-natal and pre-natal care. |
3 local players for
Azlan Shah Cup

May 19 The news of the trio being included in the team was confirmed by the Chandigarh Hockey Academy coach Jasbir Singh Bajwa. “I got a call from Jaswinder who informed me about the selection of the three players”, Jasbir said. They were called for the camp held at New Delhi on the basis of their recent performance in domestic tournaments. Rajpal and Chadha have been in and out of the Indian team and have never secured a regular place in the squad. Rajpal has already played for India and scored a goal against Pakistan in the previous edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tourney held in 2004. Inderjit Chadha was left out of the team just before the Indian team left for warm-up tournaments held in Europe then. But he played during the junior world cup in 2000 where the team lifted the cup. Besides, he had also participated in the hockey test series against Holland. Jaswinder would make his debut at the international level. He had represented rest of India team in 2002 and performed well against Australia in the tournament held at Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. Mr Jasbir Bajwa, who had been training the trio, is all praise for them. “All the three had been under my coaching since 1992, when they joined the sports wing at Sector 42 sports complex. They have been working hard and performing consistently,” Jasbir said.

Ajay Sharma ready to help youngsters
Chandigarh, May 19 The former cricketer, who is an officer with the Central Warehousing Corporation, has been posted to Chandigarh office of the CWC and does his daily physical workout at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here. Talking to the Tribune Ajay, who has scored more than 10,000 first class runs, said “I come to the stadium only for my physical fitness and I am ready to help any local youngster who approaches for any tips.” Ajay, who has the unique distinction of scoring three hundreds in separate finals of the Ranji trophy, said he would not like to comment on who should be the coach of the Indian team. “I am not in touch with cricket these days so I am not in position to comment on the issue”, he said. The only Test match Ajay played was against the West Indies in 1986-87 when Narendra Hirwani took 16 wickets and Ravi Shastri was the captain of the team. He played 31 one-day internationals but was overlooked subsequently despite his sterling performances in domestic cricket. Ajay said he was got involved in the match-fixing scandal and wanted the court to give its verdict as soon as possible. “I am waiting for the court’s verdict. After that I would be able to make my plan about coaching or opening of cricket academy. |
Chandigarh to have own swimming team
Chandigarh, May 19 Only a few days back at the behest of SFI, an ad hoc committee was formed and the secretary general of the Punjab Swimming Association, Mr Balraj Sharma, was deputed by Mr V. Nanavati, secretary general, SFI, to make this announcement. Mr S.M. Sharma, A senior IPS officer of Punjab was made the Chairman of the same and accordingly the committee announced that the trials will be held on May 30 at the Sector 23 swimming pool. Swimmers would now be included in the Chandigarh team as a separate UT swimming team will be allowed to take part in different events. There will be roughly more than 50 events where a participant could get entry for the nationals. Earlier UT swimmers had to knock the doors of neighbouring states like Punjab and Haryana and they always had to face stiff competition in the presence of large number of swimmers from these states. Ms Jasjeet Kaur, swimming coach at the Government Yoga Centre, where trials will be held, said Chandigarh has a number of talented swimmers like Vivek Yadav, Gaganpreet Oberoi, Harsimran and Nikhat Pannu among others. Chandigarh has coaching centres in Sector 23, Sector 23 C and the Lake Club, where city swimmers are practising for the trials. City swimmer and ex-PEC student, Puneet Rana, who is also a SAF games medallist, has qualified to take part in the world swimming meet to be held in Montreal (Canada) from July 17 to 31. Puneet who has been a national games medallist has been practising at Bangalore. |
