Care centre for AIDS patients opened

Chandigarh, May 6
The UT Administrator, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), today inaugurated Community Care Centre for HIV/AIDS patients at Khuda Ali Sher village. A 10-bed centre, which has come up with the cost of Rs 20 lakh, currently has six positive HIV persons.

Accompanied by Ms Jean Rodrigues, the Administrator went around the wards, met patients and enquired after their well-being. He told them to be courageous and bold to fight this challenge and assured full support from the Administration for their recovery and to help them to lead a normal life.

Addressing the gathering, General Rodrigues emphasised the need of urgent collective action by the community as a whole to check the occurrence and spread of the HIV by adopting multi-prolonged supportive strategies.

“All individuals in society must have to move with the time and to work with commitment, responsiveness and missionary zeal for making this region AIDS and HIV-infection free,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, UT Red Cross Society, Mr Arun Kumar, said the centre would also train the families to look after the ill, especially terminal cases, by providing palliative pain relief along with good quality of life. The Director Health Services, Dr C.P. Bansal, proposed a vote of thanks.

Raipur to have dispensary

Chandigarh, May 6
To strengthen the health facilities in the city, the UT Health Department has decided to provide new dispensaries at Behlana and Raipur Khurd villages, apart from the upgrading existing health infrastructure.

For the benefit of employee and traders working in Sector 17, the Health Department has also proposed to provide a dispensary at Sector 17.

Talking to the Tribune, the Director, Health, Dr C.P.Bansal, said it had also been decided to provide dispensaries in Sector 17 and Sector 52. There is no health facility available at the two places. To facilitate the construction of the new facilities during 2005-2006, the issue for allotment of land was being taken up with the concerned authorities.

The Health Department has also initiated the process of upgrading the polyclinic in sector 45.

Chandigarh win Markan trophy by 224 runs

Mohali, May 6
Chandigarh won the ongoing M.L. Markan under-17 inter-district cricket tournament beating Ludhiana with a massive lead of 224 runs. The win was decided on the second day of the match on the basis of the first innings. The match was held at the PCA complex here today.

The Ludhiana team resumed their play at the day before the score of three for no loss in three overs. Opener Atul Kohli contributed 37 runs and the wickets kept on falling at regular intervals. The entire team was bowled out at just 177 in 77.5 overs. Other contributors for Ludhiana were Bharat Malhotra (24), Gitansh (29), Vishvajeet (39), Romi Brar (19).

Chandigarh’s Sumit Dhiman took 3 wickets for 22 runs, Sandeep Bhattacharya 2 for 49 and Amanjeet 2 for 22.

A fine bowling by Vipul 4 for 11 and good batting performance by Anurag Thakur 40 unbeaten helped Little Flower Public school beat New Model Public school 9 wickets in Satluj Lake Cricket tournament (under 15) at the grounds of Satluj school here today.

New Model: 75 all out

Arjat 22, Laxman 20, Vipul 4 for 11, Shankar 2 for 12.

Little Flower:

76 for 1 in 11.1 overs

Chaman Vatika wins cricket tourney

A fine knock of 35 runs in 20 balls by Saurabh enabled Chaman Vatika beat Little Flower Public School in the ongoing Satluj League Cricket Tournament, under-15, being held at the Satluj Public School grounds, here today.

In a closely contested match, Amiteshwar contributed 30 runs to the kitty of Chaman Vatika. Jagdeep and Abhijit claimed two wickets each.
