Newly-wed woman dies mysteriously

Tension prevailed in the local Karnail Singh Nagar area here today following the death of a newly-married woman under mysterious circumstances.

Gang of fake tax officials busted
Ludhiana, May 3
The Focal Point police today claimed to have busted a gang of tricksters, who used to dupe people by posing as sale tax officials and looted them. The police has arrested two members of the gang.

BKU to agitate against directive on headworks

The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has threatened to launch a mass agitation against the directive of the Rajasthan High Court on handing over the control of headworks to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), saying the decision was unconstitutional and against the interests of farmers of Punjab.

SDMs urged to speed up economic census work
Ludhiana, May 3
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma has directed all charge officers deputed for the economic census to complete the survey by May 15 and submit the data with the Deputy Economic and Statistical Advisor so that the final report to the Economic Advisor to the Government of Punjab at Chandigarh could be sent by May 31.

New Chief Engineer to focus on regular power supply

Mr P.K. Aggarwal, who took over as the new Chief Engineer of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), Central Zone, today plans to focus on providing regular power supply to urban and rural consumers.

Property prices shoot up along Ferozepore road
Ludhiana, May 3
The new Ludhiana, if there was any, has mainly come up along the Ferozepore road. The reasons are obvious as all ‘posh’ localities like the Gurdev Nagar, Sarabha Nagar, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Aggar Nagar, Rajguru Nagar have come up along this road. Punjab Agricultural University also gives this road a distinct identity.

Decision on fringe benefits tax condemned

Condemning the Finance Minister’s decision to retain fringe benefits tax, the Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry today said the government was only making the taxation system more complex instead of simplifying it.

Three persons, accused of setting on fire the pesticide shop of Mr Ved Parkash Rawal, a SAD leader and former sarpanch, at Bassian a week ago have been arrested by the police here.

Married woman commits ‘suicide’
Jagraon, May 3
A married woman allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances. Ramandeep Kaur (27), who was married seven years ago to Mr Sikandar Singh, a resident of Rani Wala Khu, Jagraon, had a heated exchange of words with the husband. Feeling frustrated, she set herself ablaze today in the early hours.

Rs 80,000 looted from ‘dera’
Samrala, May 3
Certain miscreants looted Rs 80,000, a gun and 24 cartridges from the dera of Mehma Shah in Lopon village, 8 km from here, last night.

Teachers to protest privatisation move
Ludhiana, May 3
The Anti-Privatisation Adhyapak Morcha has flayed the state government for issuing “distorted version of its earlier statements”. Mr Charan Singh Sarabha, general secretary of the Government School Teachers Union, in a press statement today said in this year’s budget, it was proposed to revamp educational standards and the government would pay due compensation to private establishments, who were to impart education under government policies. “Such statements are indications to privatise government schools”, said Mr Sarabha.

Teachers resent non-academic duties
Ludhiana, May 3
Government teachers in the state are up in the arms against the bureaucrats over the issue of their duties on “non-academic work”.They feel that not only the work in the schools has suffered a set-back, but the teachers, too, are a harassed lot.

Suspended PAU employees stage dharna
Ludhiana, May 3
Two suspended employees of Punjab Agricultural University, Mr Sat Pal Sharma, Accounts Officer, and Mr Ram Saran Arora, Administrative cum Accounts Officer, today staged a dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, protesting against their continued suspension. They alleged that they were being victimised. While Mr Sharma was suspended on October 4, 2004, Mr Arora was suspended on December 17, 2004.

Varsity staff not paid salary
Ludhiana, May 3
Teaching and non-teaching staff of Punjab Agricultural University has not been paid the salary for the month of April so far as the state government has not released the grant for the months of March and April. PAU has already lost Rs 40.26 crore as this amount was to be received before March 31 and the same has lapsed now, maintain the state authorities.

Hosts Punjab in the senior section and Delhi in the junior section emerged triumphant to bag the overall trophies in the three-day second North Zone Annual Athletic Meet for the visually impaired organised by the Punjab Sports Association for the Blind which concluded at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
