Plot to kill chief of Khalsa Panchayat unearthed

The Jagraon police today claimed to have unearthed a plot to kill a senior leader of the Khalsa Panchayat with the arrest of a gang of robbers, contract killers and extortionists who have been found involved in 35 different crimes and were led by a self-styled saint.

Wife thwarts husband’s bid to remarry

A remarriage attempt by a Fazilka-based man was thwarted by his vigilant wife, when she contacted the bride’s family along with proof here late last night. The bridegroom, instead of taking his ‘bride’ along for a happy life thereafter, was made to cool his heels in a local police station.

Residents of this nondescript village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road were tightlipped over the reports of involvement of Sant Samsher Singh Jagera in the attempt to murder an office-bearer of the Khalsa Panchayat, which had remained in the news at the time of registration of a rape case against him.

Suspected robber commits suicide
Doraha, May 1
A suspected robber committed suicide while the other was caught by the police after a hot chase at Shahpur village near here, today. They were fleeing after allegedly taking away a taxi forcibly from Linda village.

May Day is on Sunday. Yet many schools in order to get media coverage have celebrated the day two days in advance. It has become a routine feature for some institutes to do this in order to get space in the newspapers even as the others are stragglers. Even when the day is over, they keep celebrating the occasion. With the result an important day stretches on for a week and the importance of the day is lost.

Chicago martyrs remembered

The PAU Employees Union, the PAU Class IV Workers Union and the PAU Daily Paid Labour Union celebrated May Day. Mr Amrit Pal, general secretary of the union, said the significance of the day was still relevant today because the ruling classes were still trying to deprive the working class of the benefits, which they had earned by long, consistent and militant struggles.

New Director calls for crop diversification

Dr Sarjit Singh Gill took over as Director of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, here today. Prior to his new appointment, Dr Gill was the Additional Director, Extension Education (Training), in the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU. He signed his joining report in the presence of his close friends, faculty and staff of the Directorate of Extension Education and Centre for Communication, Languages and Culture.

The annual prize distribution function of Baba Kartar Singh Dukki Government Senior Secondary School, Latala, was organised on the school premises yesterday. Ms Kuldeep Kaur, a daughter of Baba Kartar Singh Dukki, a Gadar Movement freedom fighter, presided over the function, while Mr Jagpal Singh Khangura, a Congress leader, was the chief guest.

Avdeep shoots gold in air pistol
Ludhiana, May 1
Avdeep Singh Bhogal, a student Class VIII of local St Thomas School, made his alma mater as well as the city proud by bagging a gold medal in the 29th Northern India Shooting Championship held from April 22 to 27 at Dehra Dun. Avneet Singh represented Punjab in the air pistol event for sub-junior boys in this meet and gave a stupendous performance. He secured 355 points out of maximum 400 points to romp home victorious.

Bedi XI win a thriller by two runs

Thanks to strokeful batting display by Bobby (92) and Kuldeep Dhammi (47), Bedi XI managed to scrape past Unique XI by two runs and secured a berth in the Ist Girdhari Lal Sharma and Dharam Raj Memorial Cricket Tournament being held at the Bachan Singh Academy ground at Balloke village near Haibowal Khurd, near here today.

Ramgarhia school lads clinch softball title

In a one-sided affair, hosts Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School, Miller Ganj, thrashed Teja Singh Swatantar Memorial Senior Secondary School, Simla Puri, 10-0 to wrap up the title in the boys section of the Ludhiana District Softball Championship which concluded at the Ramgarhia Educational Complex here today.
