CAT Bar members go on strike
Chandigarh, April 21 The Bar Association announced also to abstain from work on April 25. Demanding scrapping of the draft legislation which would pave the way for amending the Tribunal Act, the members of the association said the move was aimed at depriving the employees from seeking justice in service related matters. Mr A.L.Vohra, who has been appointed election commissioner for the impending bar election, in a statement said the call for the strike had been given by the All-India CAT Bar Association. A general house meeting of the Bar Association was also held to decide on the future course of action.'' We will wait for the outcome of the talks being held between the All India Bar Association and the government officials", said Mr D.R.Sharma, a member of the association. Later, the general house in a joint statement said the move had been initiated as the bureaucracy was hell-bent on abolishing CAT as in some cases the bureaucrats have been pulled up in different cases. It was the bureaucracy which did not like being summoned by the tribunal bench. Questioning the move, the members of the association said on an average 80 per cent of the cases which come up before the tribunals were decided in favour of the government. |
Nurses’ body moves CAT
Chandigarh, April 21 The applicant, Madhu Puri, who is officiating Assistant Nursing Superintendent at GMCH, has stated that after appointing the nursing sisters, the authorities concerned further promoted them as Assistant Nursing Superintendents to coverup lapse on their part. The tribunal has directed the Chandigarh Administration and the GMCH authorities to file their reply. The five Assistant Nursing Superintendents have also been made respondents in the case. It may be mentioned that the Nursing Association of the GMCH had earlier filed a similar case but was withdrawn. The applicant has also sought the restoration of the earlier application. In her plea, the applicant stated that she had been on deputation from Punjab Government since 1996 and involved in various activities at the hospital. Her work had been appreciated by the authorities concerned from time to time. However, the authorities concerned appointed five nursing sisters without advertising the post. No public employment could be made without press advertisement, she contended. Similarly, in 2001, a post of Assistant Nursing Superintendent was advertised but no interview was held, she claimed. |
Stars turn techno-savvy to promote their films
Priyanka Chopra’s child-like giggles, evocative in their regularity (she chuckled at every question not posed to her and charmed with her own answers!) and the sheer charisma of Akshay Kumar (all questions elicited the trademark roguish smile!) pulled off an interesting tete-a-tete between the stars and the director/producer Vipul Shah’s with mediapersons. The interaction was to promote Shah’s latest film ‘Waqt’.
The media interaction was held over eight cities simultaneously with the ‘Star Central Hub’ set up at Reliance Infocomm’s Reliance World in Delhi and the other cities linked up through video conferencing. The interaction also included the winners of Reliance World’s two contests, one organised on Father’s Day in March and the other through net surfing packages which included the a cassette or CD of the music of ‘Waqt” along with a chance to send a video mail to the stars and win ‘a personal meeting’ with them in Delhi. Shah promise the movie to be ‘different’ like all others many movies but the interaction of the stars of ‘Waqt’ with the media today elicited warm laughs and chirpy one-liners being bandied back and forth between the two. Vipul Shah’s actor wife Shefali Shah was also present. A popular TV star, Shefali now prefers to spend her time with her children. Playing Amitabh Bachchan’s wife in ‘Waqt’ allowed her to spend time with her family and sink her teeth into a meaty role. The set of questions were predictable enough but the technology involved in reaching out to eight cities simultaneously thereby making the stars jobs easier in promoting their films seemed to relieve them.
