Amritsar
POLL: The group led by Prof H.S. Walia, vice-president, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, has captured all posts of office-bearer of the local DAV College Teachers Union here. As per the results, Prof H S Walia has been elected president while Prof Madanjit Gill was nominated vice-president. Prof R.K. Kaushal, Prof B.B. Yadav and Prof R K Jha were appointed unit secretary, joint secretary and finance secretary, respectively.

BAR ASSOCIATION: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Batala Bar Association: president — Mr Raghubir Singh Sandhu; vice-president — Mr Gurinder Singh Parmar; general secretary — Mr Sharanjit Singh; and cashier — Mr Shankar.

Hoshiarpur
FUNCTION: To provide information to women about the ways and means being taken by the Punjab Government for the protection of their rights, the State Mahila Commission and the Social Security, Women and Child Development Department jointly organised a special function at Ram Colony Camp, 5 km from here, on Tuesday. Ms Parminder Kaur, chairperson, Punjab State Women’s Commission, was the chief guest.

Members:
The Kalka MLA and Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Chander Mohan and Member of Parliament, Ms Selja Kumari, have been made members of the Municipal Council, Panchkula. A notification issued by the Governor has notified the two as members of Panchkula Municipal Council and also of Municipal Committees at Pinjore and Kalka.

Seminar: A seminar was organised by the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India here on Monday. Mr Chander Mohan, Deputy Chief Minister was the chief guest.

Panipat
DEAD: Two persons were killed in two incidents during the past 24 years in different parts of the district. While Narender (35) of Manana village reportedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance, Sonu (25) of Indira Vihar Colony was killed when a car hit him near Babarpur village.

Sonepat
ASSAULT: Two persons, Sultan Singh and his son Rajesh, were injured when they were allegedly attacked by some persons in his house at New Basti of Bandepur village 3 km from here, on Monday night. The alleged assailants, however, escaped. The Sadar police has registered a case against four youths, Rajesh, Mukesh, Shamsher and Sandeep, alias Biloo, and started investigations into the case.

BOOKED: The Gohana police has registered a case against a youth, Baljit, alias Babloo, of Mundlana village on the charge of sodomising a seven-year-old boy of the same village, and launched a hunt to apprehend him. According to a report, this followed lodging of a complaint by the parents of the boy.

HIMACHAL PRADESH

Chamba
SENTENCED: The Additional Sessions Judge of the Fast-Track Court, Chamba, Mr Pritam Singh, has convicted Subhash, Kuku and Bindu, all residents of Jolna village, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the murder of Rajan and sentenced them to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 each.

ADVICE: In view of ensuing summer and the melting of snow, the Deputy Commissioner of Chamba, Mr Rahul Anand, has advised residents of the snow-bound areas of Chamba to beware of avalanches and glaciers. He has further advised them to keep of risky sites.

Kangra
ARRESTED: The Kangra police has arrested three youths for allegedly committing the murder of another youth of Chowki Khalte village who had reportedly been missing since March 23, the police said on Tuesday. The arrested were identified as taxi driver Kuljeet, his brother Baljeet Singh and Kesar Singh. The deceased was Man Chand.
