Medical camp organised

Ludhiana, March 2
More than 800 persons were examined in a medical and eye check-up camp, organised at Sri Rama Charitable Hospital, Shaheedan, in association with Lions Club, Ludhiana, and Southhall Lions Club, London, here, today.

Needy patients were given free medicines and 20 eye operations with intra-ocular lens implant were performed at the camp.

According to Mr Jagmohan Gupta, president of Rama Sewak Sangh, the entire expenditure of the camp was borne by Rai family from London and members of the trust collectively. He said the organisation had made a small beginning in 1990 with opening of a charitable dispensary, which had now taken the shape of a 100-bedded hospital with a medical team of 16 doctors and more than 60 members of the supporting staff.

Another eye check-up and operation camp was organised by Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Sarabha village in which over 400 patients were examined and those in need of corrective surgery, were admitted to the hospital.

Giving this information here today, Mr Avtar Singh Grewal, chairman of the managing committee of the institution, informed that in addition to eye operations, the needy patients would be provided free medicines and spectacles.

Meanwhile, the Sanatan Dharm Sabha, Subhash Nagar, in a press release here today informed that a neuro-therapy camp would be held on the premises of Kamla Lohtia S.D. College, Daresi Road, here, on March 6.

50 take part in weightlifting championship

More than 50 weightlifters took part in the one-day Punjab Technical University Inter-College Weightlifting Championship held on the Guru Nanak Engineering College campus here today. Dr R.P. Singh Sukerchakia, Principal of the college, inaugurated the meet while Olympian Sandeep Sharma was the chief guest at the prize distribution function.

Results: Below 50 kg: Rahul Bansal of GNDE, Ludhiana 1, Udham Singh of Ramgarhia College, Ludhiana 2 and Vivek Sharma of Ramgarhia College, Phagwara 3; Below 62 kg: Taranjit Singh of GNDR, Ludhiana 1, Satbir Singh of IIET, Bhaddal 2 and Kuwarpal Singh of Ramgarhia College, Phagwara 3; Below 69 kg: Naveen Dutt of Ramgarhia College, Phagwara 1, Bhupinder Singh of GNDE, Ludhiana 2 and Simarjit Singh of GNDE, Ludhiana 3.

Raminder, Malinder adjudged best athletes

Raminder Singh and Malinder Kaur, both of College of Agriculture, were declared the best athletes among the boys and the girls, respectively, in the 39th annual athletics meet of the Punjab Agricultural University which concluded today. Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice Chancellor, PAU, distributed the prizes.

Results: (Boys) Shot put: Bir Joginder Singh 1, Gurinderpal Singh 2, Harpreet Kataria 3; Long jump: Raminder Singh 1, Pavaninder Singh 2 and Gursharan Singh 3; 100 m: Pavaninder Singh 1, Rajinder Saini 2 and Kaljotvir Singh 3; 400 m: Jagbir Singh 1, Pavaninder Singh 2 and Baltej Singh 3; High jump: Raminder Singh 1, Jagbir Singh 2 and Mandip Singh 3; Discus throw: Raminder Singh 1, Tusharpreet Singh 2 and Gurinderpal Singh 3; 4 x 100m: relay race: COVS 1, COA 2 and COA 3; 800 m- Jagbir Singh 1, Satnam Singh 2 and Sheetal Singh 3; 200 m: Pavanidner Singh 1, Rajinder Saini 2 and Bhupinder Singh 3; 4 x 400m relay- COVS 1, COA 2 and COA, Gurdaspur 3.

Sports Club, Aditya XI record wins

Ludhiana, March 2
Sports Club beat VCC XI 20 runs while Aditya XI defeated Jai Bhawani XI 77 runs to record victories in the 9th Rajeev Gandhi Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the Shastri Young Society at the Daresi ground here today.

In the first match, Sports Club made 153 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. VCC XI, in reply could muster 133 runs.

Brief scores: Sports Club- 153 for 9 ( Sunny Gandhi 66, Yogesh 33 and Minta 14; Varinder Patwari 2 for 30, Lalli 2 for 20 and Pardeep 2 for 28).

VCC XI- 133 for 9 ( Salil 46, Kamal n.o, Vicky 15 n.o; Sunny Gandhi 3 for 23 and Ashish 4 for 29).

The second match was played between Aditya XI and Jai Bhawani XI in which the former emerged victorious by 77 runs. Chasing a target of 197 runs, set by Aditya XI, VCC XI were bowled out for 120 overs.

Brief scores: Aditya XI- 197 for 8 ( Rakesh 46, Vipan 46 and Rahul 30; Anurag 2 for 38 and Shakun 2 for 26).
