Wound care workshop concludes
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 1
A four-day-long workshop on wound care and stoma management concluded at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here yesterday. Nursing staff of leading hospitals of northern India participated in the workshop and learned skills needed in the management of stoma care. This was the second workshop organised by S-three Hollister in association with the CMCH.

Giving details of the subject, Dr Rajeev Kapoor, in charge, colorectal surgical services and co-ordinator of stoma clinic at the CMCH, said the role of stoma unit was vital for any well-established gastro-intestinal surgical service, especially for patients with colorectal problems. Their diseases range from intestinal infection, trauma, cancer and inability to hold faces. “Whether temporary or permanent, the psychological impact of having a stoma is immense on the patient and the family. Thus a stoma therapist needs to do pre-operative counselling before surgery to manage stoma after surgery and to teach the patient to manage stoma by applying bags, emptying them and taking care of their day to day functions.”

He said the CMCH had a formal stoma unit for the past eight years. The stoma care team, being a multidisciplinary group, takes comprehensive care of the patient. It includes doctors, stoma care nurses, physiotherapists and dietitians. Some of the patients, who have had stoma surgeries earlier, also volunteered to provide additional psychological support.

The CMCH was soon going to start the appliance mail service (AMS) under the stoma clinic, in which patients could make telephonic requests for replacement bags, which would be sent through courier to them. This would enable the patients to get their appliances without having to make frequent trips to the hospital. This service would be available for patients of Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarranchal and J&K.

The workshop was structured along international guidelines to enable a team of nurses, trained in the aspect, to go back to their respective hospitals and set up formal stoma services, Dr Kapoor added.
