PCMS doctors sore over victimisation
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, February 23
Resentment prevails among the cadre of the Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) against endless financial victimisation of doctors who were selected during the tenure of a former Chairman of the PPSC, Mr Ravi Sidhu.

In a press note issued here today, Dr Hardeep Singh, president, and Dr Ajay Bagga, press secretary of the state unit of the PCMS Association, lamented even after the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, had declared these doctors innocent after a high-level vigilance inquiry, they were still compelled to serve on the entry scale of their service, without any benefit of regular annual increments and “assured career progression” of four years and nine years of service.

The functionaries of the association, while making a fervent appeal to the state government to provide justice to these doctors, remarked that it was over three years ago that the Chief Minister himself had declared all PCMS doctors selected during the tenure of Mr Sidhu as innocent on the basis of a vigilance probe. However, the serving doctors were still being victimised at the hands of the bureaucracy and were compelled to serve on a meager amount of entry scale of service.

They further informed that repeated requests of the PCMS Association had failed to get the clearance of these routine benefits. Recently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had also given a judgement on a civil writ petition, directing the release of all pending annual increments to some doctors, who were petitioners in that particular case.

In a communique to the state health minister, Mr Ramesh Chander Dogra, the association had demanded his intervention and sought justice for the doctors. The PCMS Association also asked the Chief Minister to come to the rescue of the doctors.

Do tonics help sharpen memory?
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, February 23
Now that the examination time is approaching, students and their parents have started getting jittery. Tension is mounting as students are developing examination phobia and suffering from frequent lapses of memory. Obviously, they are getting attracted towards advertisements of ‘memory tonics’ that claim to strengthen memory.

A survey by Ludhiana Tribune revealed that there were several medicines available to ‘boost’ memory, both in ayurveda and homoeopathy. However, no such tonic is available in allopathy, doctors claim.

“The ayurvedic medicines that are selling more these days are Brahmi Syrup, Shankh Pushpi, Brahmpushpi and Tej Ras,” says the owner of a medical store.

Many parents demand these preparations for their children after reading advertisements. These are also being prescribed by some ayurvedic doctors, he says. The sale of such medicines picks up during examination days, he adds. However, concentration is the precondition for their effectiveness. “The person ought to concentrate on the subject he is preparing for only then these medicines give a gentle boost to the memory,” he adds.

A homoeopathic doctor says the number of patients at her clinic increases by around three times a couple of months prior to examinations every year. “The homoeopathic medicines like Kali Phos and Anacardium certainly help memory become better. Syrups like KP Tonic and Brain Up are also effective,” she says.

The best thing about homoeopathy medicines is that these do not have any side effects. Moreover, these medicines have a lasting effect. It is not that these will help only during examination times, rather these continue to help in bettering one’s memory for long periods, she says.

“In homoeopathy, there are medicines like Gelumium that help fight various phobias. We prescribes such medicines to students whose parents come to us to seeking medication for fighting examination phobia and strengthening memory. I find these medicines are very effective,” she adds.

A medical representative of a homoeopathic company says, “I visit 10 to 12 doctors daily. All of them prescribe such medicines and they say that these are proving useful. The use of these medicines and syrups increases during examination days, he says.

An allopathic practitioner says, “We do not have any tonics for improving memory and concentration. No such tonic that can improve the concentration or build up memory exists in medical science. Some yogic asans and meditation can improve concentration, but no medicine can do that. At least allopathic doctors do not believe in any such medication,” he says.

Ms Anu Murgai, mother of two teenaged sons, says, “I do not believe that any medicine can improve memory. But the other day, I was lured by some lockets being sold by a feng shui expert. I bought two lockets spending a tidy sum of money. I persuaded my sons to wear those lockets . The very next day, the stone fell off from the lockets and my sons took them off. And then I realised that in spite of possessing common sense, I had behaved in a very irrational manner. Never again! I decided not to yield to such gimmicks.”
