Dental students showcase skills

Ludhiana, February 5
A three-week-long cultural festival, ‘Kaleidoscope 05’, organised by the undergraduate students of Christian Dental College (CDC) has been a showcase for students to unfold their creative abilities in fun-filled cultural, literary and sports competitions. An annual feature with the college, this extravaganza, initiated on January 24, will culminate on February 9.

Kaleidoscope has been divided into four groups, Jig and Jive (cultural), Vibgyor (arts), Kinetics (sports) and Thought process (literary) events.

The cultural events provide a chance for the students to showcase their wide array of talents. The cultural event started with inter-batch Antakshari today.

Under the Arts events, the college held face painting competition on February 1. Rangoli competition, pot painting and collage making competitions were also held.

The students donned on their thinking caps for the first literary event, ‘Dumb-Charades’ which took place yesterday. The staff of the dental college won the competition defeating the students. Creative writing and quiz will be held on February 7.

The sports event kicked off in the first week of the Kaleidoscope’05 with badminton, table tennis and chess matches. In the volleyball matches senior dental mechanics and hygienists won. Preliminary rounds of basketball and throw ball matches were also held. The finals will be held on February 7.

2003 batch gets overall trophy at DMCH fest

Ludhiana, February 5
Undergraduate medical students of 2003 batch were declared the overall winners of the three-day cultural festival, Ectopia 05, of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital last evening.

Out of the five batches of undergraduate students, students of the 2003 batch secured maximum points for their performance in various cultural activities.

The 2001 batch was declared second and the 2002 batch finished third.

Ms Shweta Verma, chairperson, Indian Red Cross Society was the chief guest of the concluding function. Dr N. Dubey, former Principal DMCH, Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent and chairman of the cultural committee, Dr J. Whig, vice-principal, Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Superintendent (P), were also present.

The main attraction of the programme was a fashion show by undergraduate students.

A group dance contest was also held in which the 2003 batch grabbed the first prize for their performance of Rajasthani folk dance. Students of the 2004 batch stood second for their ‘East meets West’ dance, while those of the 2000 batch were declared third for ghost dance.

Ms Verma presented certificates and trophies to the winners.

Mukul Mohindra of the 2002 batch was declared Mr Ectopia and Surneet and Harleen of the 2003 batch were adjudged Ms Ectopia.

Amandeep of the 2001 batch was declared best actor and Balreet of the 2002 batch was declared best actress.

Harleen of the 2003 batch and Rohit of the 2001 batch were declared best singers, while Sachin of the 2001 batch and Harkiran of the 2004 batch won best dancers’ award.

Abhinav Anand of the 2001 batch and Gurmeen of the 2000 batch were declared best athletes. Members of the cultural committee were also honoured.

Ludhiana to host IDA conference

Ludhiana, February 5
udhiana has been selected as the venue for the next annual dental conference by the Indian Dental Association. This was stated in a press note issued by the state unit of the IDA here. The conference will be held from January 27, 2006.

According to the press note the conference is being held in Ludhiana after a gap of 10 years. IDA is the main body of dental surgeons and has around 14,000 members all over the country.

The following members were elected unanimously to the organising committee for the conference: Dr J.L Johl, chairman; Dr Rajiv Bali, organising secretary; and Dr Gajinder Singh, treasurer.

BVM boys dominate in judo meet

Ludhiana, February 5
Judokas of the Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School dominated the events in the boy’s section on the opening day of the Ludhiana District Judo Championship being held at the multi-purpose hall of Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today.

Rohit, Bikramjit, Kishanjit and Vinod of BVM School gave outstanding performances and fetched gold medals in their respective age groups.

Earlier, Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana inaugurated the meet in which more than 250 judokas in different age groups are taking part. Mr D.S. Walia and Mr O.S. Nagi, president and general secretary, respectively, of the Ludhiana District Judo Association, Mr Rakesh Singh, senior coach (judo) and Mr Baljit Singh Gill, Vice-Principal of BVM School, Udham Singh Nagar, were present.

Results: (Boys u-12 years and below 25 kg)- Rohit of BVM School 1, Prabhat of BVM School 2, Damanpreet of Government School, Kundan Puri and Rohit of Everest School 3; (below 30 kg)- Akash of SN Public High School 1, Vikas of Everest School 2, Shakti of BVM School and Sagar of Everest School 3.

Below 40 kg- Bikramjit of BVM School 1 and Keshav of BVM School 2; (below 35 kg)- Kihsanjit of BVM Schoo 1, Tarun of BVM School 2 , Deepak and Som Nath of Everest School 3.

(Boys u-14 years)- below 35 kg- Simrajit of Arya School 1, Nitin of Government School Cemetary Road 2, Rajesh of Everest School and Harikishan of Evershine School 3; (below 40 kg)- Amit Kumar of Arya School 1, Amritpal of Everest School 2, Sumit of Everest School and Sandeep Sharma of Government School, Kundan Puri 3; (Below 45 kg)- Onkar of Everest School 1, Atul of BVM School 2 and Sagar of Everest School 3.

MC XI suffer defeat

Ludhiana, February 5
Despite fine batting by Sunil Sharma (43) and Gurpreet Khaira (26), MC XI failed to achieve the target (154 runs) set by Deepak XI and suffered their first defeat in the ongoing cricket tournament at the cricket ground of Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys here today.

Batting first, Deepak XI made 153 runs in their allotted 30 overs with main contributions coming through Karan Goel (35) and Gaurav Marwaha (29). For MC XI, Rajeev and Rinka were the most successful bowlers claiming four and two wickets, respectively.

In reply, MC XI’s innings folded at 139 runs in 28.5 overs. Skipper Sunil Sharma contributed 43 runs, followed by Anil Singla (22), Salil Kaushal (25) and Gurpreet Khaira (26). Deepak Kapoor and Gaurav Marwaha of Deepak XI scalped three and two wickets respectively to help their teams to wrap up the match.
