Admn clears projects worth Rs 7.8 crore
Chandigarh, January 28
Long-pending development projects of widening of roads, sinking of tubewells, tree plantation and greening of the city have been approved at a total cost of Rs 7.8 crore. Works of widening and strengthening of the link road from the roundabout at Sectors 25, 24 and 38 up to UT boundary and construction of four-lane dual carriageway from the Railway light point to IT Park Junction costing Rs 2.11 crore have been approved.

Alarmed at the hacking of pawanbansal.com website and the DPS MMS case, the Chandigarh Police has rushed into opening a cyber security cell without even providing it with a computer, Internet connection, trained manpower and a proper office. The Chandigarh Police had set up a Cyber Security Cell in the Crime Branch in the last week of December last year.

  Chauhan elected Bar Association chief
Chandigarh, January 28
Mr Ashok Chauhan was elected president of the District Bar Association (DBA) here today. Mr Chauhan who polled 453 votes, defeated Mr H.S. Hundal who polled 426 votes. As many as 884 votes were polled and five votes were cancelled.

Poor response to auction of booths
Chandigarh, January 28
The auction of land and booths at the municipal corporation office in Sector 17 here today drew a poor response. Only 13 out of the total 79 sites were auctioned.

In order to regulate and control noise producing and generating sources, the Environment Department of Chandigarh Administration has included additional areas under commercial residential and silence zones. There is no change in industrial zone.

Meeting discusses solid waste management

A meeting of the Monitoring Committee constituted to oversee the progress of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) sponsored ‘Demonstration Project’ for the management of Municipal solid waste in Chandigarh was held today under the Chairmanship of Mr S.K. Groz Beckert donates 4 lakh for tsunami-hit

Mr Walter Kissinger, Managing Director of Groz Beckert Asia Pvt. Ltd. Chandigarh and its General Manager, Lt. Col. M.S. Dhaliwal (retd.) today presented a cheque for Rs.4 lakh to Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), as contribution towards Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to help tsunami victims.

DC’s order to landlords on tenants

District Magistrate Arun Kumar making it obligatory has promulgated an order under Section 144 Cr.P.C. for landlords and owners or managers of commercial establishment renting out accommodation to any person to furnish particulars of tenant(s) to the Station House Officer concerned in writing.

Man found dead
Chandigarh, January 28
Narinder Kumar alias Kala, in his mid thirties and resident of Sector 56 was found dead yesterday morning near Old Post Office in Daddu Majra Colony, here. The police said the deceased was an addict and died due to cold.

Govt College R-Day parade adjudged best

Students of Government College, Mohali won first prize at the Republic Day parade held at the Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B1 here yesterday. The parade of Sant Isher Singh School came second and the students of Shivalik Public School Phase VI were awarded the third prize in parade.

Workshop on bio-informatics opens

A two-day workshop on ‘Basics of Bio-informatics’ was inaugurated by Dr Pawan Kapur, Director, C.S.I.O, at Panjab University here today. Dr Kapur in his inaugural address talked about emerging fields of bio-informatics such as neuroinformatics and chemo-informatics.

12 tennis players from  Pakistan arrive

6 CFA players called for  u-16 camp
Chandigarh, January 28
Six players of Chandigarh Football Academy who were earlier picked in the national under-14 team that toured Nepal, have now been called for the under-16 national camp being held in Goa to finalise the national under-16 football team.

St Xavier’s team wins trophy
Chandigarh, January 28
The team from St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, emerged as the winners in the third All-India Euro Enviro Quiz held here today. Teams from eight schools participated. The team of Karanveer Singh and Shyam Upadhaya, both students of Class VIII, would now compete in the national level semi-finals scheduled to be held at Mumbai on February 19.
