Govt College R-Day parade adjudged best

Mohali, January 28
Students of Government College, Mohali won first prize at the Republic Day parade held at the Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B1 here yesterday. The parade of Sant Isher Singh School came second and the students of Shivalik Public School Phase VI were awarded the third prize in parade.

The Mohali administration awarded special letters of commendation to residents of the township for various achievements. These include educationists Mr D.S. Bedi and Mr J.S. Bedi. Mr D.S. Bedi is founder of the Shivalik Public Schools, Mr J.S. Bedi is the founder of Gian Jyoti Group of institutes.

The Mohali administration would be acknowledged bravery of the staff of the State Bank of Patiala, PTL branch, Mohali. Mr Hazara Singh, the gunman, Mr Tirlok Singh, a clerk and Mr Harjit Singh, a sevadar risked their lives to foil a robbery at bank on January 1. Mr Pritam Singh, manager in the Industry Department was also awarded.

Among the policemen awarded include, Baldev Singh In-charge PCR, Kulbir Singh in-charge Phase 11 police post, Ram Darshan, Jamvinder Singh, Kimti Lal, Jaspal Singh, Bahadar Singh, Jatinder Singh and Roshan Lal. Prominent residents of the township including Col H.S. Sangha, Ms Amiteshwar Kaur, Ms Chandrakanta and Ms Amanveer Kaur were also honoured on the occasion.

Parliamentary secretary for health and family welfare, Punjab Ms Razia Sultana was the chief guest and hoisted the national flag and inspected the parade. She exhorted residents to serve the nation. She said every individual could make a difference and change surroundings for the better.

Over a 1000 students of various schools in the township participated in the Republic Day Celebrations. Mohali police personnel led the Republic day parade. For the first time, NCC cadets from Government College, Mohali had participated in the parade. Other than the parade, students of various schools and the ITI polytechnic presented a cultural show on the occasion.

The Rajasthani dance presented by students of Shivalik Public School got first prize while rainbow dance presented by students of Saint Soldiers School got the second prize.

The participating schools include the Yadvindra Public School, Shivalik School, Gianjyoti School, Gem Public School, Government Senior Secondary School Manoli, Saint Soldiers School, Kambala High School, Government Schools in Bakarpur Daulat Singhwala, Gobindgarh and Landran.

114 students awarded in library-related contests

Chandigarh, January 28
The winners of the 12th Competition Master Library related competitions were awarded at the prize giving function organised at DAV College, Sector 10, here yesterday. The UT Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan today awarded the awards to the winners.

As many as 4000 students had taken part in the contest organised on November 21, 2004, in St. John’s High School, Sector 26. In all 203 prizes were given this year. Out of these 99 prizes, relating to the inter-school, inter-college competitions, have already been given to the winners. The remaining 114 prizes were awarded today.

The objective of these competitions was to infuse spirit of competition among the schools and colleges students and to popularise books and libraries.

Speaking on the occasion the Home Secretary said the reading habit should be encouraged right from childhood. He said the quality and quantity of reading material available have become enormous, leading to information explosion. Earlier, Ms Jaspal Kaur, president, CLA, welcomed the chief guest and the prize winners.

Variety programme marks annual day

The annual day of the Bal Niketan Senior Model School, Sector 37, was organised on the school premises here yesterday. The student presented a variety programme. The highlight of the event was western dance, Rajasthani dance, Dogri dance, harvest dance and an English play.

The Director of the school, Dr Kapoor, read out the annual report of the school. He informed that a separate nursery wing with theme-based classrooms had been added at the school. The Minister of State, Science and Technology and Industrial Training, Mr Rakesh Pandey, was the chief guest and Mr Pawan Bansal, Member of Parliament, presided over the function

C. Subramanyan award

The annual prize distribution function of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was organised here on Monday. Mr R.K. Saboo, chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, presided over the ceremony.

As part of the school tradition, the outgoing captains, led by Arjun Channi and Garima Bawa, handed over their charges to the new team headed by Arjun Sheoran and Ankita Sagar.

Arjun Channi won the Louis Vicente Giay Trophy for leadership while Jaspreet Kaur won the KJ Khosla Memorial Award for leadership. The coveted C. Subramanayan award for excellence in character went to Garima Bawa, Deepti Jindal and Abhayjeet Singh.

Awards were also given for outstanding performance in academics, sports, literary, cultural and social service. The teachers who wee awarded for maximum attendance were Ms Suparna Bansal, Mr Anupama Khanna.

Workshop on bio-informatics opens

Chandigarh, January 28
A two-day workshop on ‘Basics of Bio-informatics’ was inaugurated by Dr Pawan Kapur, Director, C.S.I.O, at Panjab University here today.

Dr Kapur in his inaugural address talked about emerging fields of bio-informatics such as neuroinformatics and chemo-informatics. The significant aspect of the field was that various sciences such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, computers, statistics, branches of biology as biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology came under the umbrella of bio-informatics.

The reason for this was that the research in these branches generated an extensive amount of data that was impossible to analyse and interpret without the applications of bioinformatics. Bioinformatics basically understands the functioning of organisms with the help of computers.

As many as 52 participants from different institutes are taking part in the deliberations on self-financing, said Prof R.C. Sobti, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology.

Dr Karmeshu, one of the pioneers of Bio-informatics in India, delivered the keynote address and stressed that the next 500 years would belong to biological sciences.

Workshop

A seven-day workshop on transformation of printed material into SIM (Self Instruction Material) mode concluded at the Department of Correspondence Studies, Panjab University, here today. As many as 28 participants attended the workshop.

Teachers of Department of Correspondence Studies from different disciplines were actively engaged in the conversion of lesions into self-learning mode. More than 350 lessons in different subjects were transformed to the advantage of the students.

The second series of workshop on transformation of printed material into SIM mode is being held from January 29 to February 4. Dr Madhu Parhar of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, would be the resource person at the said workshop, said Prof Devinder Singh, Chairperson, Department of Correspondence Studies.

Literacy campaign for slum residents launched

Chandigarh, January 28
The Yuvsatta and the Health Care India celebrated Republic Day by launching a “total literacy campaign” in Colony No 5. A function was organised at Red Cross Dispensary in the colony.

Nearly 300 persons watched the cultural programme in which members of the Kranti Youth Club of Colony No. 5 presented various items like group and solo songs, skits on Independence movement and giddha.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajesh Kumar, in charge of Colony No. 5 project of the Yuvsatta, said: “The main reason for poverty and hunger which the slumdwellers face daily is illiteracy and lack of motivation to get right kind of education. Education precedes enlightenment and everybody, we believe, is entitled to education and because a majority of slumdwellers are illiterate and school dropouts so they remain unaware of the majority of government schemes and programmes to uplift them.”

It is with this view, he said, the Yuvsatta had launched the total literacy campaign. The campaign would also involve vocational education for females of the slum so that they could raise their socio-economic status.

Mr Harmohinder Singh ‘Lucky’, councillor, Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, who was chief guest, assured his support for all such noble efforts. Ms Vijay Singla, a trainer of Art of Living courses, also spoke on the occasion.

The Yuvsatta has enrolled 300 children, between the age group of 5-7, who are school dropouts or not going to school.
