26 hurt in J&K grenade attack
Srinagar, January 27 The police here said militants fired two rifle grenades towards the tehsil office at Pampore, highway township of Pulwama district, this afternoon injuring 26 persons, including 22 civilians and four police personnel. The two grenades were fired when filing of nomination papers was on at the tehsil office for the forthcoming civic body polls. The township and other major towns in the twin districts of Pulwama and Anantnag go to the civic polls on February 6, after those to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation on February 1. The civic polls in twin districts of Baramulla and Kupwara in north Kashmir are scheduled for January 29. Militants also hurled a grenade towards the convoy of senior PDP leader and Finance Minister Muzaff Hussain Beigh when they were going to Hajin township of Baramulla district to address a public meeting in connection with the civic polls. No damage was caused, as the grenade did not explode, reports said, adding that people later resenting the presence of the leaders indulged in stone pelting. The police fired the in air to chase away the protesters, reports reaching here said. A candidate of the Congress party contesting civic polls was shot dead in Baramulla earlier this month. Three supporters of the Opposition National Conference were killed when suspected militants hurled a grenade at a gathering in support of the party candidate for civic polls at Alamgari Bazar here recently. A police spokesman said here this evening that throat-slit bodies of a father-son duo were recovered from Chodri Bagh, Kremshore in Budgam district today. The two persons, Ghulam Qadir Beigh, a government employee, and his son, Bilal Ahmad, radio mechanic, had been kidnapped from their house by suspected militants last night. Two suspected militants were apprehended by the security forces in Baramulla and Kupwara districts during searches, the police here said. Giving details, a spokesman said one suspected militant was held at Delina in Baramulla district on Tuesday. Two AK magazines, six AK rounds, Rs 20 in Pakistani currency, Rs 520 in Indian currency, and other items were recovered from him. One suspect was held at Nag Sundri in Kupwara district from whose possession two hand-grenades were recovered. |

Jammu, January 27 Despite threats of militants strikes, a large number of people, including women and students, participated in these functions. In the border areas of Poonch and Rajouri, even the severe cold conditions could not deter people from attending these functions. Governor S.K. Sinha presided over the main function held in the stadium here. He took salute from contingents of the police, paramilitary forces, NCC cadets and school students. He said peace was discernible at the end of the dark tunnel of terrorism. He said the overall scenario in the state had improved. “We are steadily advancing towards light and peace,” he added. In the presence of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the Governor referred to various development projects, including the railway line between Udhampur and Srinagar and the Baglihar power project. He said these projects, along with the Prime Minister’s Rs 24,000-crore economic package, were bound to improve the lot of people in the state. SRINAGAR: The Republic Day celebrations were held peacefully amid tight security across the valley. The main function was held at Bakshi Stadium, here. Jammu, January 27 In a statement, Prof Bhim Singh said here today that the Pakistan Television World telecast on January 26 some live shots in order to give credibility to the story that a total hartal was observed in Kashmir and women protesters were lathi-charged by the police. The Panthers Party supremo said that these shots were a big lie and had been fabricated or were those from Afghanistan when everyone knew that a large number of people had participated in the Republic Day functions in all parts of Jammu and Kashmir. |
Journalist Sathu cremated
Jammu, January 27 Sathu (83) is survived by his wife. He had started his career with Hamdard in Srinagar, edited by Mr Prem Nath Bazaz, a prominent author and journalist, about 60 years ago. Later he took active part in the freedom movement and was involved in a bomb case for which he had to remain in Tihar Jail for several years. Sathu was externed from the Kashmir valley. He returned in 1964 to start his career as a journalist with the Daily Telegraph, London. He remained associated with the Telegraph for over 30 years. He also worked as a correspondent in Deccan Herald for about 10 years. A large number of journalists, editors of local newspapers, leaders of various political parties and senior bureaucrats were present at the funeral. |

Srinagar, January 27 The grenade fell on the roadside, but did not explode, official sources said. Mr Baig was on the way to nearby Hajan to address an election rally.
