Housing scheme launched on R-Day

The 56th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour all over the district. Besides the district-level function of the government at the Government College for Boys, functions were organised at various subdivisions, tehsils, colleges, schools apart from the functions of the political parties, social organisations and non-government organisations.

CM donates Rs10 lakh to man for
children’s education

Ludhiana, January 27
The unrelenting struggle of Gurnam Singh, a daily wage worker, to get his children educated, finally bore fruit with the Chief Minister providing him a grant of Rs 10 lakh at the Republic Day function here yesterday.

Divers return empty-handed from R-Day function
Ludhiana, January 27
The dreams of two divers to get recognition for their act of bravery was once again shattered when they returned empty handed from the venue of the Republic Day function even after they were invited to the function by a local cop.  Disappointment was in store for Satyen Sahni and Rutal Mahato when they reached the venue only to find out that their names were not in the list of awardees.

Boy dies after getting ‘wrong’ injection
Ludhiana, January 27
A 16-year-old boy has died after he was allegedly administered a wrong injection by a registered medical practitioner in Bal Singh Nagar at Basti Jodhewal, here today. The victim, Mukesh, was suffering from pneumonia for the past one month and was taking treatment from the RMP of that area.

Parking site auctioned
Khanna, January 27
The parking site at Guru Amar Dass Market, Khanna, was auctioned here today at the Municipal Council office in the presence of representatives of the Deputy Director, Local Bodies, Ludhiana. The auction was finalised at a price of Rs 6.12 lakh.

Industry protests against service tax, VAT
Ludhiana, January 27
Led by the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA), members of more than 20 industrial associations today held a protest at the Central Excise headquarters here in protest against the imposition of service tax on several auxiliary services and job works, related with the bicycle industry.

Bank of India opens extension counter
Ludhiana, January 27
Bank of India today opened its extension counter at GRD Academy here. The extension counter was inaugurated by Mr Raja Singh, chairman, GRD Academy. Speaking on the occasion, Mr A.K. Jalota, zonal manager, Bank of India, said the bank planned to expand its retail, SSI, housing and agricultural credit in a big way.

Kanwal Dhillon is an actress who believes in realistic portrayal of life. Her capability to capture the very essence of a character has made her a popular figure in the field of dramatics. Kanwal is the daughter of renowned Punjabi poet Bhagwan Dhillon. She was initiated into the world of theatre by Prof Sompal Heera, Punjabi writer, director and actor.

Ashirwad — in service of the disabled
Ludhiana, January 27
A function was held today at the centre for multiple disabilities, Ashirwad, to mark the distribution of privilege cards. It was presided over by Mrs Amrit Gill, SDM East, Ludhiana. Indian Association of Paediatrics, Ludhiana branch, has made a special gesture for the special needs of children by providing free OPD consultation to these children.

Eye check-up camp held
Sahnewal, January 27
A free eye check-up camp was organised at Lalton Khurd village here on Tuesday. Dr S. S. Dhir, SMO, Sahnewal, informed that the camp was organised in collaboration with the Baba Inder Singh Charitable Trust, Lalton Khurd, under the guidance of Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana.

Bank donates Rs 1 lakh for Lala Lajpat Rai sports mela

Punjab National Bank (PNB) has donated Rs 1 lakh to the Lala Lajpat Rai Janamsthan Yadgar Committee, Duhdike, for organising the 50th Lala Lajpat Rai Birthday Sports Mela. The three-day sports mela was inaugurated yesterday.

Mr Balwinder Singh, press secretary, Gujjarwal Sports Club, Gujjarwal, has informed that a three-day 32nd Amarjit Memorial Annual Rural Sports Festival would be organised at the village stadium from February 11.
