Reorient education in villages: VC

PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh today said that there was a need to reorient the rural education keeping in view the technological and other changes taking place. Inaugurating the two-day National Seminar on ‘Reorientation of Home Science Education’ organised by the College of Home Science, sponsored by ICAR, Dr Aulakh said that keeping in view the futuristic needs and challenges being faced by the society the issue assumed great significance.

Appreciating the ICAR for choosing PAU to hold this National Seminar, Dr Aulakh agreed to look forward into the recommendations made by the participants of the seminar because it is the need of the hour to improve the quality of education particularly in rural areas. He said that these recommendations will pave the way for reconstructing Home Science curricula that is capable of taking care of the needs of it clients.

Sharing his vision on education, Dr J.C. Katyal, Deputy Director General (Edn), ICAR New Delhi said that the primary aim of agricultural education is to meet the challenges of agriculture in order to add value to agricultural economy.

Dr P. Sundaram, former Vice-Chancellor, Mother Teressa Women’ University, Kodaikanal (Tamil Nadu) said, ‘‘we are going on the right to find solutions for the present issues we are taking up.’’

Dr (Mrs) Manjit Kaur Dhillon, giving a brief note on the history of college of Home Science, said that this seminar will certainly help in finding the strategies to reorient the Home Science curriculum.

Suspended PAU official alleges victimisation

Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, Dr K.S. Aulakh, today suspended Mr R.S. Arora, administrative and accounts officer in the office of the Dean College of Veterinary Sciences. The chargesheet will follow and during suspension he will be paid the subsistence allowance as per rules.

Reacting to suspension, Mr Arora alleged, “it is a clear case of victimisation”. In a letter to the Vice Chancellor, Mr Arora urged him to “revoke these (suspension orders) by 21.12.2004 failing which I shall be forced to resort to constitutional and other remedial measures as per law of the land”.

Meanwhile, the PAU Employees and Teachers’ Joint Action Committee has condemned the suspension alleging that it was a case of victimisation. Mr Arora is a member of the committee which has spearheaded a campaign against the VC. The committee alleged that the university was victimising the teachers by inflicting undue penalties on them, besides denying them the promotions.

The JAC also criticised the president of the PAU Teachers Association, Mr H.S. Brar for his support to the VC. It alleged Mr Brar was trying to please the VC by taking his side.

On the other hand a university spokesman strongly denied the allegations of “victimisation”. He pointed out, it was an administrative order. The spokesman added, simple suspension is no punishment. The spokesman said, Mr Arora would be given full chance to explain his position. If found innocent suspension will be revoked, the spokesman pointed out.

Unemployed teachers form protest plans

The Unemployed Elementary Teachers Union at a meeting in Punjabi Bhavan today decided to start a series of protests and condemned the government for going back on promises.

President of Union, Jaswinder Singh Sidhu said,” From December 30 we are going to devise new ways of protests so that the government pays heed to our demands.”

Outlining their struggle to get regular employment for the unemployed teachers of the Union , he said that they had camped in Kapurthala from September 22 to October 9 during byelections. On October 8 the Union had held a meeting in Ropar with Captain Amarinder Singh and Finance Minister Singla. They got the assurance that they would get a notification on regularisation of job soon, so they lifted the dharna. But nothing materialised even after meeting Ms Rajinder Bhattal.

The Union leaders tried to meet the Chief Minister, but he had gone to Delhi. Finally notification regarding jobs appeared on December 6 and on December 13, the first meeting was held. But yet no concrete plans were formulated.

Press Secretary of the union Jhirmal Singh said there were 11,888 vacancies and teachers were unemployed and struggling for employment . Present on the occasion besides hundreds of unemployed teachers were General Secretary of Union Nirmal Singh and Mr Ranjit Singh Bhat, District Student Welfare.

Schoolchildren celebrate Christmas

A function in connection with Christmas and New Year was celebrated today in SKSK Educational Institute. A fancy dress competition was organised by students of Nursery and LKG. A dance and song programme was also organised. Anmol, Paras, Anjali and Mohnisha were given 1st, IInd, IIIrd and IVth prizes. Parents were also invited. Principal gave away the prizes to the students.

Visit to traffic park: A fun-filled learning experience to the Traffic Training Park, Model Town, was organised for children of LKG of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Ludhiana, on December 17. The aim of this visit was to make children aware of some traffic rules. They also enjoyed the picnic arranged for them. The children were shown traffic lights and explained what each light stood for, with the help of a poem. Also, they were told how to walk on road and given some road safety tips.

Exhibition: Darshan Academy had organised an exhibition today. The students from Nursery to Class VIII had collected information about several factors of the city. They had presented this information on charts and models which were exhibited today. The chief guest was Mr V.K. Goyal, Chief Executive of Vardhman mill. A cultural programme and fancy dress competition was also organised on the occasion. Mr Goyal appreciated the novel way of presentation of facts.

Symposium organised

The Ludhiana Citizens’ Health Council in association with DD Jain College of Education organised a symposium on the theme “Current status of pre-birth elimination of females” in Ludhiana here today.

Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, Minister of Women and Child Development Department, Punjab, was the chief guest. She said the PNDT Act must be enforced with the help of all departments concerned, legal authorities and non-government organisations.

Dr Chander Mohini, organising secretary and Principal DD Jain College, stressed that awareness must be raised towards legal rights of women and girls. Legal facilities must be quick and affordable. The government departments and non-government agencies need to develop some innovative and result-oriented measures to address the issue of pre-birth elimination of females. Among others present on the occasion were Mr Charanjit Singh, vice-president and Dr Ranjit Singh Tomar, convener, Ludhiana Citizens Health Council.

Short-term training programme: A two-week short-term training programme on “Concepts and technology of Facts” sponsored by the AICTE-ISTE was inaugurated at Electrical Engineering Department, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, here today by Prof Hari Singh, former Principal, GNDEC. The keynote address was given by Mr M.S. Bajwa, Deputy Chief Engineer (PSEB).

Prof Hari stressed that the society should cooperate with engineers to implement their findings. Mr Bajwa talked about the economics and constraints involved while implementing the FACTS devices in electrical power systems.

Seminar on education

Under the 'Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan,’ second seminar was inaugurated here today. It was presided by acting Principal, Mrs Rajinder Kaur, lecturer Inservice Training Centre, Ludhiana.

Mr Harminder Singh Manocha and Mr Prem Lal Sharma, DPE were also present. Leader of resource persons Dr Gulzar Mohammad Goria spoke on purposes of the Abhiyan.

More than 40 teachers of different schools of Block E-II attended the seminar.

Resource persons Mr Satinder Kumar lecturer, Mr Narinderpal Verma, Mr Balwinder Singh and Mr Jagroopjit Singh Shahi will speak on Health Care, Mental and Health Social Cooperation and clear Environment. Seminar will continue up to December 24.

Woollens distributed among students

Wollens were distributed among 90 students of Government Elementary School, Lasara, by Mr Surain Singh Saini, Range Officer, Doraha, on Saturday.
Mr Naresh Kumar, a teacher of the school and Mr Kulwant Singh Mangat, who organised the programme, welcomed the guest. They also said the students of the school were being regularly helped.

Mr Naresh Kumar said parents of the students were economically weak and at times could not afford to pay even for the daily needs of their wards.

Mr Surain Singh Saini, too, appreciated the efforts of school teachers in this regard and also asked the students to study despite economic insecurity so that they might stand on their feet and sustain themselves and their family members.

Cultural mela concludes

The trend among the young generation to form NGOs in villages and towns of the state is a healthy step for the development of the society. Field for such clubs is very wide.

They come forward in calamities, organise medical camps, cultural programmes and help the needy in various fields said Mr Sadhu Singh Dharmasot, parliamentary secretary (Home, justice and PWD), who was the chief guest at the 14th Annual cultural function ‘Mehak Punjab Di’, organised by the Punjab Sabhyacharak Club yesterday under the aegis of Nehru Yuvak Kender. Function was inaugurated by Mr Gursatinder Singh Sakhon, and presided over by Mr Bhagwan Singh Laddi.

Mr Dharamsot lauded the club for serving the society for the past 14 years. He announced a grant of Rs 31000/- for the club. The Brigadier also gave Rs 5100/- to the club. The chief guest gave away woollens among 200 poor students.

Principal Rosan Lal Sood, President of the club, thanked the guests, artistes and people. Mr Balbir Singh Ghuman, General Secretary, asserted that the club has been organising programmes distributing books, woollens for the past 14 years besides organising blood donation and medical camps.

Council chief Baldev Singh Aulakh, Mr Gurdev Singh vice-president, DCC, Mr Pargat Singh Anian, Mr Rajpal Garg, District vice-president BJP, Mr Jarnail Singh president Gurdwara Singh Sabha were among the speakers.

The Samrala art centre presented plays “Bhikhari” and “Bal Bhagwan”, directed by Master Tarlochan Singh besides skits and monoacting. Singers Jaspal Jassi, Bhupinder Bhuri, Kulbir Kaulgaria, Rajinder Raj Paheri, Avtar Azad regaled audience with their songs. The programme continued till late evening.

Depression posing serious problems, say experts

Depression is emerging as a serious problem in the country and a majority of the cases remain undiagnosed and unidentified. These observations were made by Dr Rajeev Gupta, a psychiatrist, in a talk on “Depression: an epidemic in medical practice”, here yesterday.

He said common symptoms of depression were sadness, crying spells, negative thoughts, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, restlessness, anger, frustration, suicidal tendenecy and loss of memory. He stressed the need for timely management of such patients.

Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, Dayanand Medical College, was of the view that fast life was responsible for pace of spurt in psychological problems. He made a plea for the need to maintain a balanced and healthy life-style. Pointing towards serious emotional problems like anxiety and depression, being faced by children, he said yoga and meditation could help.

Club donates Rs 51,000 for thalassaemic children

Following the traditions to provide financial assistance to non-government organizations (NGOs) working for the welfare of disabled children, the Sutlej Club has donated Rs 51,000 to the Thalassemic Welfare Society for the treatment of children suffering from the disease.

Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy, Commissioner and President of the District Red Cross Society presented a cheque to Dr Parveen Sobti, president of the society at the 5th Annual Day Function of the society organised at the club last evening.

Addressing the function, Mr Verma said the thalassemic children required regular transfusion of blood. He said the society had been making appreciable contribution for the past five years. He called upon the NGOs working in the field of health facilities to come forward to extend help to the children suffering from thalassemia, as parents of these children were unable to meet the regular demand of blood.

Plan to pick talented players for Commonwealth Games

“For the first time the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) has chalked out a plan to pick the talented students in different disciplines during the 5th National School Games going on in Ludhiana. The SGFI will train these students, hone their skills to participate in the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2010,” said Mahabali Padamshree Satpal Singh , president of the SGFI.He was in the city today to take stock of the games.

He said,”We have seen China was nowhere earlier,but by good planning it achieved second position in the Olympics. Similarly we have decided on a long term planning. The selected students during summer vacation will attend camps in which ex-national players and coaches will train the students.Like Ajitpal Singh would train hockey team and Khazan Singh swimming team. Similarly we will rope in more sportspersons. The students will get free diet and free training. Some jobs will be reserved for them. Already 5 per cent jobs have been reserved for athletes that win gold medals.”

Mr Satpal said he had won gold medals in wrestling and also the Arjuna Award, but the coaching facilities were not available. “Now we want to provide opportunities for budding young sportspersons. They will get all facilities by the next six monthis. We will get specialists to take care of diet”.

About the present games, he said Punjab had organised the games rather well and the credit goes to Dr Rupa Saini, Deputy Director, Physical Education.

S.S. Sandhu wins golf championship

Ludhiana, December 20
S.S. Sandhu of the Chandigarh Golf Club with a score of 77 emerged the winner in the PGA Guru Teg Inter-Club Golf Championship organised at the Ranjitgarh Golf Club of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, near here.

As many as 36 golfers of nine teams from Punjab took part in the championship. Col J.S. Deo, also of the Chandigarh Golf Club secured 77 points but had to content with the first runner-up position while K S Ghuman, representing the PAP Club of Jalandhar finished as second runner-up.

Another participant from the PAP Club, Jalandhar, Simranjit Singh Pilot (8th hole) won the longest drive prize and K.S. Ghuman (9’-5”) bagged the nearest to pin trophy.

The Chandigarh Golf Club accumulated 325 scores to annex the team event trophy and the Ranjitgarh Golf Club, Phillaur, with 330 score got the runners-up trophy.

Dr G.S. Aujla, Director, Punjab Police Academy, gave away prizes to the position holders.
