Rice worth Rs 60 cr rots in FCI godowns

As much as 5.25 lakh quintals of rice, costing nearly Rs 60 crore is awaiting loading from the FCI godowns here. The Punjab Government has to pay an interest of Rs 2 lakh per day as interest to the FCI on this account.

Marriages become too ostentatious
Ludhiana, December 12
Marriage season was at its peak recently. It saw invitation cards that were a class apart. An exclusive wedding card came with ‘kundan work’ on it. Since it was a unique card, the invitees were requested to preserve it. Another card came in a sleek wooden box with a panel of coloured mythological figures and Vedic mantras printed on it. Inside were sleek cards for various occasions.

A farmer of Seelon Khurd has been booked under Sections 376, 354, 506, 511, 376 and 323 of the IPC for allegedly attempting to rape a widow of Doraha town.

Extortion case solved, two held
Jagraon, December 12
The Sidhwanbet police has claimed to have solve the case of extortion of Rs 50,000 from Balkar Singh of Bhundri with the arrest of Ajmer Singh, of Humbran and Bikramjit Singh of Majri within 24 hours of the occurrence of the incident.

Lathi charge invites BJP wrath
Ludhiana, December 12
The BJP has criticised the police lathi charge on peacefully agitating party workers here on Friday. Presiding over a meeting of the office-bearers here last evening, the district president of the party, Dr Subhash Verma, said it was reprehensible that the police did not even spare mediapersons, who were also lathicharged and their cameras damaged during the dharna at the Mini Secretariat. The government ought to launch a high-level inquiry into the matter and the erring police officers be dealt with sternly, he said.

1 held for abducting minor girl
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 12 The Dehlon police has arrested a person for allegedly abducting a minor girl of Jand village on the pretext of getting her married into a prosperous family. According to the SSP, Jagraon, Mr Rajiv Ahir, Lakhwinder Singh of Guram village in Ludhiana district was nabbed by the Dehlon police yesterday at a naka.

Bottles of liquor seized, 3 held
Khanna, December 12
The Khanna police has seized 56 bottles of countrymade liquor and arrested three persons from two different places yesterday night. According to the police, a police party was patrolling near Boothgarh village late last evening. Head Constable Jarnail Singh, who was leading the party, signalled a tractor-trailer to stop. During the search, the police seized 24 bottles of country-made liquor. The driver, Jaswant Singh of Boothgarh village was arrested.

Truck-tempo collide one killed, 3 hurt 
Jagraon, December 12
One person was killed and three others were injured when a tempo and a truck collided on the GT Road near Kothe Baggu, 3 km from here, today. According to information, the collision beween tempo (PAR-2356) and truck (HR-55B-3921) took place around 8 a.m.

The Primary/Elementary Save Education Front, Punjab, has appreciated the Education Minister, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, for taking certain impartial decisions during a meeting with presidents and general secretaries of all teachers’ unions recently. The meeting was held at Chandigarh.

Principal Zora Singh at a brief function organised at the Government Secondary School for Boys here yesterday honoured Mr Mehar Singh ‘Guru’ , lecturer of the school, for the laurels brought by him for the school. Mr ‘Guru’ is one of the six officials of the district who have been awarded the President of India’s census medal for outstanding contribution during census operationers in the state in the year 2001.

Donate blood, says philanthropist

Let blood save precious human lives by circulating in the vessels of some needy persons instead of spilling on the roads, a local philanthropist, Mr Jagjit Singh Jajjie, who was felicitated by the district administration recently has appealed to the youth.
Jagjit Singh Jajjie (turbaned), who has set a record of donating blood 133 times, was honoured by Mr Hussan Lal, DC, Sangrur, at a function held at Mandi Ahmedgarh.

12-day dental camp ends
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 12
A 12-day dental camp, organised by the Bharat Vas Parishad, Ahmedgarh, and its branch at Hargobind Nagar, concluded at the local Civil Hospital today. The concluding function was presided over by Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, MLA, Kila Raipur. Dr K.C. Goyal, DHO, Sangrur, was the chief guest.

150 examined at medical camp
Doraha, December 12
A two-day medical check-up camp was organised at Sidhu Hospital here, which concluded here today. A total of 150 patients were examined during the camp. Dr Gurdip Singh Sidhu, Director and Head of the Department of Surgery, informed that hernia could be cured surgically.
