BJP activists lathicharged, former Deputy Speaker among those arrested

The police here today afternoon lathicharged and arrested several BJP leaders and workers to prevent them from gheraoing SSP Narinderpal Singh in the Minisecretariat Complex besides forcibly lifting another group, sitting on a dharna, outside the complex in the morning.

25 BJP leaders booked for violating DM’s order

Thath violence case: police move to exonerate babas
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 10
While most of the accused named in cases registered at the Police Station, Payal in connection with the incidents of violence that took place at the Thath on October 11, 2003 have been found guilty during an investigation made by the crime branch of the Punjab Police, the names of the leaders of the two factions warring for the control of the religious place have been recommended for exclusion from the FIRs. The Superintendent of Police, conducting the investigation has written to his senior to direct the SSP Khanna to present challans in connection with rest of the accused.

Suicide by middle-aged man
Jagraon, December 10
A middle-aged man allegedly committed suicide and his body was found hanging in one of the rooms of a house where he was living with his wife as a tenant. According to information Iqbal (32), a resident of Buggipura was residing along with his wife in a rented house belonging to Ms Kulwant Kaur, in Gandhi Nagar, Jagraon. His wife is said to be school teacher in government primary school at Ramgarh village and it was her second marriage. The couple had no issue.

Police seeks clarification on AIDS infection report
Ludhiana, December 10
The district police is learnt to have rejected the inquiry conducted by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) into the allegations against a city doctor for having allegedly transfused HIV-infected blood into a woman without testing the blood for infections. The inquiry was referred to the IMA by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana, after the husband of the victim had made a representation before him seeking registration of a criminal case against the accused doctor.

Old man complaints to VB against Patwari
Ludhiana, December 10
Tired of knocking at various doors, 70-year-old, Bhajan Singh who had been asking for a revenue record from the local Revenue Department has finally complained to the Vigilance Bureau against a Patwari of Dhandra village. The VB had summoned Mr Bhajan Singh to the local office to record his statement.

DMC faculty for strict action against Kalia
Ludhiana, December 10
Everybody is surprised why the striking employees of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital have ensured the disruption of work in the hospital, but have not enforced the strike in the Hero DMC Heart Centre this time as it remains their soft target. The reason is simple that Mr Gurprasad Kalia, father of Chander mohan Kalia, leader of the strike is admitted there after having undergone heart bypass surgery.

International Human Rights Day celebrated
Jatana (Ludhiana), December 10
Justice N.C. Jain, Chairman, Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), today called upon people to send more complaints to the commission. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a tree plantation drive in the village and releasing a poster on human rights on the occasion of International Human Rights Day today, Mr Jain said people should not make complaints only against the police to the commission but should also come forward in the spheres of caste discrimination, foeticide, social inequality and dowry harassment.

Bar association poll held
Jagraon, December 10
Mr Zorawar Singh Virk, Mr B.S. Yadav and Mr Yogesh Pasricha advocates were elected President, Vice- President and Secretary respectively of the Bar association Jagraon here today. 10 days ahead of the schedule of the election which was to be held on December 20. Mr Navin Gupta who had submitted his nomination papers for the post of vice-president paved the way for unanimity by withdrawing his name.

Seeds dealer denied bail
Ludhiana, December 10
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Sukhdarshan Singh Khaira, dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by Ramesh Kadiyan, owner of Kadiyan Seeds Corporation, Karnal. He was accused of duping the farmers by supplying sub-standard seeds, due to which they faced lot of hardships.

On the last day of the filing of nomination papers for the annual elections to the District Bar Association, 10 more candidates filed their papers. The Bar president, Mr Balwinder Goel, filed his papers. Mr G.S. Bal also filed his papers for the post of president.

CME on adolescent health held
Ludhiana, December 10
Dr A.S. Chawla, President, Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Adolescent Chapter, Punjab State Branch recently delivered a lecture on ‘Adolescent Health’ at Government Medial College, Patiala. In his address, Dr Chawla said that adolescents were being neglected so far, their problems were different from those of adults and proper counselling could do justice to them.

Ottalan village sports begin
Samrala, December 10
Today in Annual sports of Ottalan village, 3 km from here, began. Matches of hockey, bullock carts and kabaddi were the highlight of the day. In hockey, the team of Ropar team defeated Fatehgarh Sahib by the margin of 4-0 and similarly the Kurali team and Jandiala village, Jandiala won with 5-0 goals: The team of Lasarra defeated the Sarih with the margin of 2-1 and in hockey club Shahpur and Raikot, the Raikot team won with the margin of 4-1.

The auction of commercial booths/SCOs sites here on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana road was held here last evening under the chairpersonship of Ms Alaka Nanda Additional Controller PUDA along with Mr Tilak Raj Bias Estate Officer and local SDM Baldev Singh.
