CULTURAL MEET: The KG High School set an example for other educational institutions on Wednesday by inspiring the students to present religious dances and songs only at the annual cultural meet. Didi Brahmrita, a disciple of Vishavatma Bawraji was the chief guest. The programme started with recitation of Hanuman Chaleesa followed by aarti. A rich feast of songs followed it and dances related to the life of Lord Krishna and Rama were performed by students.

FUNCTION: Dr Harbans Singh Chahal, District Education Officer (Secondary), Ferozepore, advised heads of the schools to make the morning assembly more impressive and creative to inculcate love for studies among the students. Dr Chahal presided over the annual prize distribution function of Divine Light Public School here on Wednesday. He exhorted the students to spend at least a period from their school time table to read newspapers and magazines daily.

SEMINAR: A seminar- cum-workshop was held at the LRS DAV Senior Secondary School here on Wednesday. Senior educationists, Dr Vijay Grover and Mrs Vaneeta Singh, were the key speakers. Dr Grover and Mrs Singh said the parents had revised their expectations from the teaching community so the teachers would have to update their knowledge for modernising education. Complaints, if any, from the parents must be properly redressed.

PANCH SUSPENDED: Mr Jasvir Singh, a Panch of Baghaur gram panchayat, has been suspended by Mr Bahadur Singh, Deputy Director, Punjab Land Developments, due to the illegal possession of the panchayat ghar. Mr Achhar Singh of the same village has complained to the Tehsildar, Samrala, that Jasvir Singh has taken the illegal possession of the panchayat ghar for the past many years. On visiting the site, the naib tehsildar also rejected the girdawari application given by Jasvir Singh. OC

ARHTIYA ASSOCIATION: Mr Harpal Singh Dhillon, president of the arhtiya association, Samrala, has taken over as Chairman of the Market Committee, Samrala, on Tuesday. Earlier, Mr Baldev Singh, SDM Samrala, was the administrator of the committee. Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, MLA, Samrala, Mr Balbir Singh Rajewal, national secretary of the Bharti Kisan Union, along with arhtiyas of the grain market were present. OC

GHAZAL BHASKAR AWARD: Parveen Kumar Ashk, Urdu poet, was conferred with the Ghazal Bhaskar award for the year of 2004 by a Delhi-based literary organisation, Kavya Ganga, at an impressive function held at Delhi, for his contributions in Urdu poetry. Ashk, an officer in the Ranjit Sagar Dam, is presently busy in writing songs for feature films.

GIRL FOUND ABANDONED: A new born girl child was found abandoned on Tuesday evening from near a distributary in the Onkar Nagar area.Hardly one or two days old,the infant had an injury on her head but was alive.The infant was spotted while crying and lying under a tree. She was brought to the Civil Hospital. After first aid, she was sent to the Civil Hospital, Kapurthala.

FUNCTION: The DIG Vigilance, Jalandhar Zone, Mr Ishwer Chander, called upon the young generation to cooperate with the department in ridding society of corruption and for creating a clean social fabric.The DIG was addressing, college students during a cultural function held at his alma mater, Ramgarhia College, here on Tuesday. Jalandhar Zone comprises 12 districts of Amritsar, Jalandhar,Ludhiana and Ferozpur. Over 600 cases were registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act last year and out of these 50 per cent persons were caught red-handed, he disclosed.

PRINCIPAL: Dr S.K. Garg of English Department took over as new Principal of RKSD (PG) college here on Wednesday. He took over from Prof L.M. Bindlish, Head of Chemistry Department, who had been officiating as Principal since July last. Prof Bindlish was given a warm farewell on his retirement on Tuesday night.

Sonepat
ARRESTED: A student, Sanjeev, was apprehended while he was appearing on behalf of another student in the senior secondary examination of the National Open School at an examination centre set up in Hindu Senior Secondary School in Sector 15 here on Wednesday. A case has been registered.

CRUSHING SEASON: The crushing season for 2004-05 was started in the Sonepat Cooperative Sugar Mills here on Wednesday. A large number of cane growers and officials as well as employees of the mills participated in the yajna organised on this occasion.

THEFT: Thieves reportedly broke the locks of a closed house in Housing Board Colony of Sector 14 here on Tuesday night and decamped with Rs 30,000, a colour TV set and VCD, besides other valuables.
