Increase in cane price inadequate, says Congress
Chandigarh, November 27 In a statement issued here, the secretary of the Haryana Congress, Mr Satpal Kaushik, alleged that because of an unholy nexus between the Chautala Government and private sugar mills, the sugarcane price had not been increased for the past several years. Even during the election year the government had made a fool of farmers by increasing the cane price by merely Rs 7 per quintal. He said the area under sugarcane cultivation had come down drastically this year because of the drought as well as because the farmers had not been getting remunerative prices in the past few years. As a result of the government policies, the price of cane offered by khandsari units would be more than fixed by the government for sugar mills. Mr Kaushik said sugar was selling Rs 18 a kg in the open market and the rate of molases was Rs 700 a quintal, which showed that the mills were making huge profits at the cost of the growers. Considering the cost of production, he said the cane price should have been at least Rs 125 per quintal. The government should have also got the growers their arrears of about Rs 70 crore from the private mills. He said during 2003-04, those farmers who supplied sugarcane to the private mills got Rs 10 per quintal less than the official price. While they would get Rs 6 per quintal as additional cane price under the Bhargawa formula, question mark still remained on the balance of Rs 3 per quintal. However, in 2002-03, these farmers got Rs 17 per quintal than the official price. The Yamunanagar mill alone owed about Rs 35 crore to the growers for that year. Mr Kaushik said while during the five-year term of the INLD-BJP Government, the cane price was increased merely by Rs 7 a quintal, during the Congress rule from 1991 to 1996, the increase was Rs 31 a quintal. He said the INLD suffered a humiliating defeat during the Lok Sabha elections because of its anti-farmer policies. In the next Assembly elections also, the people would teach the government a bitter lesson. |
Chauhan’s retention hailed by BJP leaders
Chandigarh, November 27 Party sources here said Mr Chauhan, a fifth time Lok Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh, was appointed by the party’s Central leadership as in charge of the party in Haryana about six months’ back. Since then the Haryana BJP leaders had two formal meetings with the party’s Central leadership regarding the issue of Assembly elections in Haryana. One meeting took place on July 18 when Mr Venkaiah Naidu was the party president while the other was on November 17 when Mr L.K. Advani had made a return as the party’s national president. “ In both meetings, the party’s Central leadership had accepted the state unit’s view that it should be allowed to go to the elections in Haryana on its own strength. Being in-charge of the party in Haryana, Mr Chauhan had played a key role in formulating the state unit’s view regarding elections”, the sources said. In Ranchi Mr Chauhan was also given the charge of the Delhi state unit of the BJP in addition to his responsibilities in Haryana. Party sources said that this too was a welcome step as it would ensure better coordination between Mr Rampyare Pande, organisational secretary, who, too, is looking after the party organisations in Delhi as well as Haryana. “Mr Chauhan, also the general secretary of the BJP, had made his view on Haryana elections clear when he announced at a rally at Rohtak last month that the party would contest the polls on its own”, the sources said. There is a lot of speculation in political circles of Haryana about a possible alliance between the BJP and the ruling INLD for the Assembly elections. There have been indications from the side of the Haryana Chief Minister and INLD president, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, that he will welcome the two parties joining hands again. The BJP’s state unit, however, is dominated by leaders who are against alliance with any other party. While the saffron party wants to contest all 90 Assembly segments, knowledgeable circles wonder whether the party will be able to manage candidates for so many seats. The number of LS seats in Haryana is only 10 but the BJP had problem in finding candidate for the Hisar seat. What eventually happened at Hisar — where the BJP plan to put up a Congress MLA from the seat did not work and the party had to make do with an obscure person as the candidate — caused a lot of embarrassment to the party. Party sources, when asked about this issue, however, said they were having candidates for about 80 Assembly seats. “Senior leaders like Mr Kartar Singh Bhadana, Rao Narbir Singh and others have left their respective parties and have joined the BJP. |
Over 50 bodies found in CM’s home dist since April
Sirsa, November 27 According to information, the police found over 50 bodies of those who could never be identified since April. Sources in the state police department consider it as serious but are quiet on the issue. Over the years, the district has become notorious for being a haven for drug peddlers and is regarded as one of the reasons behind the recovery of the bodies. According to the sources, due to the political patronage to poppy husk dealers, nothing had been done to take the issue of the recovery of the bodies seriously. With tough competition by the “big time players”, murders are common, a top police official said. Canals and roadsides in the district are the main crime spots where the bodies are recovered and the case gets “closed” after registering an FIR. Owing to rivalry between prominent groups to control the narcotic trade, clashes also go unreported. Involvement of political bosses is the main hindrance in investigating such cases, another official said. Citing an example of pressure, an official spoke about the “inability” of the police in making the information of the bodies’ public. “There is no way where the affected family could come to know about their missing relatives or family members,” said an official. According to records at the local cremation ground, as many as 33 bodies were cremated since April which were recovered by the police. The S.P., Mr H.S. Doon, could not be contacted. |
Ex-minister Dhanak killed in mishap
Hisar, November 27 Dhanak's brother-in-law Banwari Lal was also killed in the mishap. They were returning to Hansi after attending a marriage ceremony from Delhi when the mishap took place. They were near Sorkhi when their Bolero car rammed into a stationary truck. The car driver was seriously injured in the accident. The District Congress Committee organised a condolence meeting here today to mourn the death of the departed leader. Meanwhile the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, expressed deep shock and grief over the sad demise of Mr Amar Singh Dhanak, former Minister of the State, who lost his life in a road accident last night. Mr Chautala said Mr Dhanak had always worked for the uplift of the downtrodden and had dedicated his life towards social causes. The Chief Minister also sent his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family. |
Police teams out to hunt for killer Ambala, November 27 Police teams have been formed to look for the man. These have already left for Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that Bobby could have fled to a neighbouring state. He had probably used a pistol in the attack. Bullets of 9 mm calibre have been found on the spot. The police is carefully going through the records on Bobby to find out where all he has operated from in the past. Police officials suspect that Bobby might strike again to “avenge” an attack in Subhash Colony. Rinku, who was killed in the shooting, was cremated today. Ashwini, who was shot in the groin, was operated upon at the PGI, Chandigarh. Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Indian Medical Association, Ambala Cantonment, was held at the Civil Hospital there regarding the protest against a doctor and a chemist who were alleged to have demanded money to treat
Ashwani. The doctors strongly condemned the “hooliganism” by Ashwini’s relatives. “This is not in the interest of the patients in general, as the doctors will not be able to do justice to the profession if they are subjected to work in such an atmosphere of fear and terror,” the doctors said. The doctors urged the administration to improve the law and order situation so that the life and property of the doctors were safe. |
