Rally to create awareness about AIDS

Chandigarh, November 26
Commemorating the World AIDS Day falls on the December 1, students of Colony No. 4 took out a rally for creating mass awareness about the HIV infection and AIDS here today.

The rally was organised by the society for Education in Health and Allied Trainings (SEHAT), Mohali and the “Bharatiya Aazad Sanstha” in association with the State AIDS Control Society, UT. The rally was flagged off by Dr N.N. Pathak, Director of SEHAT.

Earlier in the day, an on-the-spot painting competition and quiz competition were organised on the theme ‘HIV/AIDS’.

Two feature films were also screened in the colony to spread the message. Project coordinator, Chand Singh Madaan said another march and a medical-cum-health camp would be organised in the colony on Monday.

DAV School clinch under-16 cricket title

Chandigarh, November 26
Arjit Gupta captured four wickets for 12 runs and then followed it up with an unbeaten knock of 54 runs to enable DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here defeat Government Model School, Sector 35, to clinch the Chandigarh under-16 inter school cricket title here today.

Batting first, Government Model School were sent packing for 100 runs in 23.5 overs. Vishwas scored 37 runs. Arjit (four for 12) was the main wicket taker.

DAV School hit up the required runs without losing any wicket to register a 10-wicket victory

Scores: Government Model School, Sector 35: 100 all out in 23.5 overs (Vishwas 37, Harjot 13, Arjit 4 for 12, Abhishek Ghai 2 for 5).

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8: 103 for no loss (Arjit 54 not out, Vaibhav Narang 40 not out).

Athletics meet at Bhanu concludes

Logistic Sector got the first position with 181 points, Himachal Sector the second with 165 points and Trg. Sector the third with 123 points in the 24th inter-sector athletics meet-2004 which concluded at Basic Training Centre, ITBP complex, Bhanu, yesterday.

Rajiv Singh of 7 Bn. was declared the best athlete of the meet. The players who got first, second and third positions were given awards, while the best athlete award and shield of the year were distributed by the chief guest.

Mr P.C. Pande Additional Director General, ITBP, in his welcome address said 235 participants from eight sectors of the ITBP in all-India Police Games took part.

Devgun, Navi excel for St Kabir

Panchkula, November 26
A fiery bowling spell by medium pacer Kanav Devgun (5 for 8) and a brilliant century by Navi Bansal (106) steered St Kabir of Sector 26, Chandigarh, into final by defeating Saupins School of Panchkula by 184 runs in the ICL Champions Trophy for under-14 at Satluj Public School here today.

St Kabir-26 batted first and piled up 239 for 5 in allotted 25 overs. Navi Bansal flayed the Saupins School bowlers to complete his century. His unbeaten knock of 106 came off 57 balls and contained 16 fours and one six. Shubham Sachdeva made a useful contribution of 51 runs.

Saupins School batsmen were at sea against medium pacer Kanav Devgun who claimed five wickets for just eight runs. Sarabhjot got 3 for 10 and Gunjit Madra got two for six as Saupins were bundled out for just 55 runs in 15 overs.

Brief scores: St Kabir-26: 239 for 5 in 25 overs (Navi Bansal 106 not out, Shubham Sachdeva 51, Suraj 2 for 35); and Saupins School, Panchkula,: 55 all out in 15 overs (Kanav Devgun 5 for 8, Sarabhjot 3 for 10, Gunjit Madra 2 for 6).

The second semifinal will be played between St John’s-26 and Satluj Public School.

LIC Cricket Club win

Chandigarh, November 26
LIC Cricket Club defeated Prudential Cricket Club in the final of the JJ sports cash prize tournament here today. Winning the toss, Prudential Cricket Club scored 202 for 8 in 30 overs. In reply, LIC Cricket Club reached the target in 27 overs with 6 wickets in hand.

Brief scores : Prudential 202 for 8 (Gurharminder 46, Rohit 82, Jai 42, R.P. Singh 6 for 32, Vipul 2 for 30); and LIC 203 for 4 (Amrinder 34, Prabhjot 45, Vipul 40, Nagesh 30).

Roller skating

Dashuvinder and Mehak Paul won gold medals in their respective rink races and road races in the Pre-National State Roller Skating competition held at KBDAV School here on November 23 and 24. Other winners were : rink races — Karan Lamba, Bhavdeep Singh and Manjeet Singh; road race — Shivam Thakur.

DAV College win

DAV College, Chandigarh, won the Panjab University inter-college relay races championship for men here today. GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, SGGS College, Chandigarh and GGDSD College, Hariana, were second, third and fourth, respectively.

In the women’s section, GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, won the championship. Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, were second while PU campus, Chandigarh, and AS College for Women, Khanna, were third.

Carrom tourney

Hosts Saupin’s School won the boys and girls cadet trophies in the fourth Saupin’s inter-school carrom tournament here today. In the boys’ senior, boys’ junior and girls’ senior categories, Bhavan Vidyalaya beat Saupin’s B.
