Aussies plot run assault on Kiwis
Brisbane, November 17 World record wicket-taking leg-spinner Shane Warne wants to nail Fleming, paceman McGrath has singled out Astle as his key wicket and opening batsman Matthew Hayden wants to take on Vettori. Faced with a true batting wicket with early life for the seamers, Ponting has urged his men to chase a 500-plus score in quick time to put the Kiwis under early pressure. “We feel it’s about time that we really got a big first innings total,” Ponting told a match-eve press conference. “We’ve batted well without nailing down that big score we’ve been after, so we’ve spoken about that and we’re hoping to be able to do that as well.” “We are going to be very aggressive right through this series as we were in India.” Ponting indicated that if the toss were to go his way he would bat first to try and dictate the tempo and direction of the match. “Generally, Australian teams like to bat first and the wicket will offer some assistance early tomorrow morning, especially if the weather stays humid, the ball should seam around a bit,” he said. The New Zealanders have readily claimed underdog status against world cricket's champion team, but Fleming is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the might of Australia without his three leading bowlers, Shane Bond, Daryl Tuffey and Chris Cairns. “It seems to be a tactic that (Australia) use, they’ll target one or two players publicly so nothing really changes, it's just their way of identifying and trying to place pressure on individuals to break up your team unity,” Fleming said. “It’s a concern (taking 20 Australian wickets), but it's not serious, it's exciting because every team faces it when they come to Australia.” “Australia's record in Brisbane is extremely good, but I think the excitement of trying new things and actually working out how to get 20 wickets is part of the fun.” “That’s why I think we respond often better than others when we come here because of being an underdog and nothing to lose, then we can try things without a great deal of consequence.” Fleming was the mastermind of New Zealand's tactically-astute 0-0 three-Test series draw here in 2001 and such is his competitive nature that he won't concede New Zealand has a lost cause. “It's a great challenge and you have a few sleepless nights, but you are testing yourself against the best and if you do well you come away with a pretty good feeling.” Australia have left out express bowler Brett Lee, with Ponting saying that the starting eleven deserved their places.

Fleming happy chucking issue out in the open
Brisbane, November 17 An International Cricket Council (ICC) committee, made up of former Test players and chaired by former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, has recommended a new rule allowing bowlers to straighten their arms by up to 15 degrees. The proposals will be put to the ICC Chief Executives' Committee of the 10 Test-playing countries at its next meeting in Melbourne next February. The committee's recommendations have created a furore and taken some of the focus away from the first of two Australia-New Zealand Tests at the Gabba here tomorrow with Australian captain Ricky Ponting admitting it has been a distraction. Fleming, one of the more articulate skippers in world cricket, said he was eager for more information from the ICC special sub-committee and discussed the proposals with committee member and Australian Cricketers' Association chief executive Tim May here today. Fleming said the chucking issue was a massive one for international cricket. "I can tell you New Zealand Cricket has been very pro-active with it over the last 24 months," New Zealand's most capped player and all-time leading run-scorer told his match-eve press conference. "And one thing we are happy about it is some movement. For too long it was the ugly sister that wasn't being talked about but now it's out in the open and there's some positive steps being put in place. "There's a lot of emotion out there about it and I've watched with interest the various characters who've popped their heads up but I would like some more information to understand what exactly they (ICC) have in store and what exactly what they are looking for." Sri Lankan spin whiz Muttiah Muralitharan this week angered Australian cricket by claiming their leading pacers -- Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie -- bowl illegal deliveries by flexing their arms beyond the legal limit. Ponting said he was clearer about the new laws after the Australians were addressed by May, but like Fleming he still wanted more information. "We still need to know a bit more about it. We need to see it in action and see it in place," Ponting said. "The good thing about it for us yesterday was to hear it from Tim and for us to forget about it. It's nothing we've got any control over it now." Fleming said elite players or Test captains should be able to view the evidence that has led to the sub-committee making its recommendation.

We need big scores to win Kanpur Test, says Pollock
Lucknow, November 17 In a brief interaction with the media at the Lucknow Airport, Pollock, however, admitted that the Green Park Stadium pitch in Kanpur was spinner-friendly. On the recent lean patch of the visitors, the lanky cricketer declined to acknowledge that his team was having a 'bad run'. The SA team arrived here this evening en route to Kanpur. Rahul Dravid, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and speedster Zaheer Khan also arrived with team physio Andrew Leipus. The rest of the team is expected to arrive later. However, the Indian players evaded media queries and immediately left for the Test venue. Jadeja cracks unbeaten 103 as Delhi declare
New Delhi, November 17 Bad light stopped the play soon after tea with 26 overs still to be bowled and at stumps, Andhra Pradesh were 5 for no loss in 4.4 overs. Resuming at their overnight score of 258 for 2, the hosts added 233 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 58.3 overs before declaring the innings. However, Delhi's bid for some Andhra Wickets were frustrated by the elements as bad light made it difficult to continue the game in the last session of the day. Overnight batsmen Aakash Chopra and Mithun Manhas failed to increase the Delhi's total as the former was trapped leg before by Shahabudin before he could add to his score of 78. He faced only two balls this morning. Four runs and eight balls later it was the turn of Mithun Manhas to go back to pavilion. Medium pacer Kalyankrishnan clean bowled the batsman who was attempting for a big hit. Manhas added only four runs to his yesterday's total of 91 and Delhi slumped to 262 for 4. Delhi had 30 overs left to bowl and they hoped for a some quick wickets but bad light intervened and match was stopped with 26 overs still to be bowled. Mumbai: Stand-in skipper Vinod Kambli cracked an unbeaten half ton and resurrected the sinking Mumbai first innings in the company of Ajit Agarkar on the second day of the four-day Elite Division Group A Ranji Trophy league match against Madhya Pradesh here today. The flamboyant Kambli counter-punched his way to an unbeaten 68 in 89 balls (11x4) to lift Mumbai from 87 for 5 to 171 for 5 at stumps. When umpires Francis Gomes and K G Lakshminarayanan called off play with 6.4 overs left because of poor light conditions, Kambli was unbeaten after a stay of 140 minutes along with Agarkar, who was not out with 37 (62 balls, four fours and a six). The two had put on 84 runs in 19.2 overs for the unbroken sixth wicket and helped Mumbai finish the day 84 runs adrift of MP's first innings total of 255. Kambli entered the scene when the hosts and reigning champions were gasping at 38 for three and he saw two more wickets fall before Agarkar joined him to pull Mumbai out of the hole with some fine batting. The hosts were rocked by a three-wicket burst from first change bowler Sunil Dholpure who sent back well-set opener Wasim Jaffer (22), Amol Muzumdar (6) and Wilkin Mota (9) after the early damage had been done by new ball bowlers S Pandey and Shantanu Pitre. New Delhi: Railways bowlers wrecked the Bengal top order to force the visitors on the backfoot on the second day of their Elite Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match here on Wednesday. After posting 348 in their first innings, Railways exploited the seamer friendly conditions well to restrict Bengal to 153 for four at stumps at the Karnail Singh stadium. J P Yadav, who top scored for Railways with 93, served his side well with his medium pace to return two crucial wickets while rookie pacer Santosh Saxena accounted for the other two. Bengal, who slumped to 113 for four before an unbeaten 40-run partnership between skipper Rohan Gavaskar (24) and Laxmi Ratan Shukla (22) steadied the innings, were still 195 runs behind with six wickets intact. Karnataka struggle
Bangalore: Replying to Gujarat's first innings total of 330, Karnataka were struggling at 162 for six at close on the second day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group A encounter at M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday. Barring opener Barrington Rowland (59) and skipper J Arun Kumar (29), none of the Karnataka batsmen impressed, as Gujarat bowlers did a good job to give their team the upper hand. Vinay Kumar was the pick of the Karnataka bowlers, taking five wickets for 83 runs, while Dodda Ganesh claimed 3/92. Brief scores:

Amritsar, November 17 The day belonged to bowlers as a total of 10 wickets fell. Overnight batsmen Pankaj Dharmani (62) and Gaurav Gupta (5) resumed the innings at 297 for three. Dharmani could add only 23 runs while Gupta lost his wicket to RK Yadav on 18. Dharmani was declared lbw on 85 and missed his second century in this year’s Ranji Trophy. The visitors had a disastrous start as they lost their openers Parag Das and Parviz Aziz to medium pacer Gagandeep Singh in one over. Colombo, November 17 A team of experts and former Test players were commissioned by the International Cricket Council to examine Muralitharan's bowling action and subsequently recommended it be accepted, saying that it was common among many bowlers. Since the report became public, Muralitharan has been making comments on other players whom he believes have illegal bowling actions. "Since Murali is a contract player of Sri Lanka Cricket, we have told him that he is not allowed to make statements without our approval," Ray Illangakoon, a spokesman for the board said. "From now on, he will not make any statement," Illangakoon said.

National Hockey League begins in January
New Delhi, November 17 Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) president KPS Gill said here today that Tier I will consist of Sher-e-Jallandhar from Jallandhar, captained by Gagan Ajit Singh, Maratha Warriors from Mumbai, led by Viren Rasquinha, Chennai Veterans skippered by Ignace Tirkey, Hyderabad Sultans captained by Dilip Tirkey and Bangalore High Flyers led by Arjun Halappa. Tier II comprise Delhi Dazzlers, Lucknow Nawabs, Imphal Rangers, Bengal Tigers and Chandigarh Dynamos. The captains, coaches and managers of Tier II teams will be named later. Mr Gill said these exotic names were zeroed in after extensive market researches in the respective metroes. He said Tier I will be called the "Premier Division" while Tier II will be known as "First Division". The League will follow a round-robin format with all the teams playing each other twice. The winners will be decided on the basis of total points logged. Mr Gill said former Olympians Ramandeep Singh and Surinder Singh Sondhi will be the coach and manager, respectively for Sher-e-Jallandhar while Jagbir Singh and Ramachandra Rao will be the coach and manager for the Hyderabad Sultans. B P Govinda and T Jebarathnam will be the coach and manager for Chennai Veerans, Ramesh Parameshwaran and K Krishnamurty for Bangalore High Flyers and Calrence Lobo and P S Sujalana for Maratha Warriors. The IHF president said each team will have a maximum of five foreign players, and 17 foreign players have already agreed to play in the League. He said negotiations are on to net eight more players as 25 foreign players would be permitted to play in the League. Mr Gill said the National League will afford an opportunity, for the first time, for players from India and Pakistan to play in the same side. IHF officials were in touch with players from Pakistan, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, Holland and South Korea to recruit them for the League. The League will offer a total cash prize of Rs 71 lakh with the winners of Tier I getting Rs 30 lakh and the runners-up Rs 10 lakh. The Tier II winners will get Rs 4 lakh while the runners-up will be richer by Rs 2.5 lakh. IHF secretary K Jyothikumaran said the allocation of the prize money between the players and the respective associations will be specified by the federation. Hyderabad will be the venue for the League till other venues get flood-lighting facilities. Mr Gill said hockey stadiums at Chandigarh, Chennai and the National Stadium in New Delhi will soon be flood-lit, enabling the IHF to rotate the League in the future. Mr Gill said once the League got going, the various tournaments dotting the country will be regulated and the National Championships will be held every two years. He said since the League will be held in the winter months, other hockey tournamets will have to reschedule their dates so as not to clash with the League. The IHF president said the next edition of the National Championship will be held immediately after the month-long National League, in February, either in Delhi or in Hyderabad as only these two associations have bid for the championship. ESPN Star Sports will telecast the League live for ten years. Managing director of ESPN R C Venkateish disclosed that innovations have been made in the League to increase viewer interest in the game. Each game will have four quarters of 17 minutes and 30 seconds each, instead of two halves. New concepts of time-outs have also been introduced in order to liven up the game. The winners within the stipulated game time will get three points for each victory while the team winning the extra time will share the
points 2:1. Mr Gill said the eventual aim was to widen the canvas of the Natioal League comprising 10 teams, which would have 50 foreign players and 200 Indian players. He said the League will afford an opportunity to witness various styles of play which will give valuable experience to the Indian players. The purpose of the League was to groom young talent, instead of flogging the old war horses. "The idea would be to rely more and more on younger players", he noted. "The League will hopefully restore the mass base of hockey", he said with great optimism. The teams will be selected taing into consideration the strengths and weakness of each team to give a well-balanced feel. And the prize money disbursement will depend on the calibre of the
players. |
