National Warehousing sports meet inaugurated

Chandigarh, November 16
The third National Warehousing Sports Meet was inaugurated today here by, Mr Lal Singh, Punjab Minister for Irrigation, Power and Cooperation, at the Athletics Stadium Sector 7. About 250 athletes from eight units, AP, MP, UP, Maharasatra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, CWC and Punjab — are taking part in the meet.

The following are the results:

Athletics 800 metres (men): Santosh Khalko (Madhya Pradesh)1, RB Bhadoriya (MP)2, K. Sudarshan (Maharashtra) 3.

Discuss throw (men): Sunil Sudan (Delhi )1, Kabul Singh (Punjab) 2, Shakti Singh (Delhi 3).

Long jump (men): Santosh Khalko (MP)1, Shakti Singh (Delhi )2, Rajesh Kumar Singh (UP) 3.

Slow cycling (men): Rajeskear 1, R.R. Mitkari 2, R. Veeraiah (Tamil Nadhu) 3.

800 (women): Rajni (Delhi) 1, Adsul SD (Maharashtra )2, Rakuman (Karnataka) 3.

Cricket: Punjab beats Tamil nadu by 10 wicket.

Kabaddi: Tamil Nadu beat Madhya Pradesh 65-12; Andhra Pradesh beat Karnataka 41-6.

Tug of war: Delhi beat Karnataka; Punjab beat Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh beat Tamil Nadu.

Carrom (first round: men) P.D. Nalawade (Mah) beat M.S. Reddy (AP) 21-06; Rajshekar (Kan) beat D. Nirmal Singh (AP) 21-0; Alokh Kohli (CWC) beat B.V. Reddy (AP)5-0; L. Bhattacharya beat H.S. Aulokh (Punjab) Walkove; Amrik Singh (CWC) beat Pardeep Kumar (Punjab) Walkove.

Women:D. Vajiyanthimala (TM) beat Sangeeta Khatri (CWC) 14-10; A.A. Kshirsagar (Mah) beat Rekh Dubey (CWC) 25-3.

Sports Festival

Amandeep Kaur of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, Chandigarh, will lead the Chandigarh contingent in the forthcoming National Sports Festival for Women to be held at Ludhiana from November 17.

The following are the teams: basketball: Amandeep Kaur (capt), Sheweta Dutta, Prabhjot Kaur, Mohinder Jeet Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Sakshi, Harjeet Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur, Gurjit Kaur, Pinki, Sumeet and Sachin.

Gymnastics: Yogita Thapa, Garret Kaur, Pinki, Gagan, Asha, Sarita and Harjit Kaur.

Ms Parmjit Kaur and Ms Madhvi Bharaj will be the coaches, while Mr Manjit Singh will be the leader of the contingent.

Athletic meet

The Amateur Athletic Association of Chandigarh will conduct the Chandigarh State Athletic Championship-2004, for sub-juniors, juniors and seniors on November 19 and 20 at Athletic Complex, Sector 7.

The two-day meet will begin at 9 am on November 19.

According to Ravinder Chaudhry, secretary, AAAC, the meet will be held for Chandigarh athletes in the following categories — boys and girls under-14-year (born after 31.12.1990); boys and girls under 16 (born after 31.12.1988); boys and girls under 18 (born after 31.12.1986); boys and girls under 20 years (born on after 31.12.1948).

The Chandigarh athletic team for the Junior Nationals will be selected during this meet. The Junior National will be held at Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) from December 18 to 22.

Greenfield wins

Greenfield School, Mohali today beat St Saupin’s, Panchkula by two runs on the opening day of the Ist ICL Champions Trophy inter-school under-14 for boys, being played at the Satluj Cricket ground at Panchkula.

St Saupin’s won the toss and decided to field first. Their bowlers bowled well and restricted Greenfield Mohali to 94 runs. Ginni Padam (22) was the highest scorer for the team.

Pryanshu of St Saupin’s claimed four wickets, giving just 15 runs.

In reply, St Saupin’s XI just fell short by two runs.

Brief scores: Greenfield School, Mohali (94 all out in 22 overs). Ginni Padam 22, Paryanshu 4 for 15, Aman 2 for 19, Ankur 2 for 16, St Saupin’s XI (92 all out in 23 overs) Aman 22, Ankur 14, Munish 2 for 13.

Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, beat Government Model School, Sector 22, by seven wickets in the UT Interschool Cricket Tournament held at Government Model School, Sector 32, today.

GMS 22 won the toss and elected to bat. The team scored 93 runs in 24.3 overs. Jasdeep (12), Kartik (10) and Rohit (12) were the main rungetters for the team.

Gourav Kumar got three wickets for 25 runs, Sandeep Sandhu 20 runs two wickets and Bagwant got 6 runs two wickets.

In reply, Sanjay Public School scored 94 for three in 14.4 overs. Vikas Jog scored 28, Gouravdeep Singh 22 and Alok Bhardwaj 19.

St Stephen’s school triumph

Chandigarh, November 16
St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Chandigarh, beat hosts St. John’s High School, Sector 26, by 45 runs in the final of the Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament for under-14 players.

Brief scores: St Stephen’s 137 for 6 (Akshay 44, Gaurav Puri 31, Lakhan 23, Vishal 2 for 26). St. John’s 92 all out in 26 overs (Ayush 15, Sahib Malhotra 3 for 17, Gaurav 2 for 18, Prateek 2 for 19).

Gaurav Puri of St Stephen’s was declared the best batsman while the best fielder was Prateek Kumaria of St Stephen’s. The best bowler was Utkarsh of St. John’s while Akshay Sharma of St Stephen’s was declared the man of the series.
