St Joseph's win fencing meet

Chandigarh, November 9
Hosts St Joseph's School, Sector 44, were declared overall champion in the under-17 section in the UT inter school fencing tournament played here today on the school premises. They got 27 points. Second place went to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, who got 18 points while third place to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10 with 14 points.

Results: foil — St Joseph's-44 b GMSSS-33 (2-1); epee; St Josrph's-44 b GMSSS-33 (2-1); and Sabre — GMSSS-10 b St Joseph's-44 (2-0).

In the UT inter-school karate championship held today at St Joseph's School, Sector 44, those who were adjudged winners in various weight categories are: AushPal, Dikshit, Vishal, Vinay, Jaideep, Amit and Rohit.

Netball champions

SGGS College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University inter-college netball championship (men) while DAV College, Sector 10, got second place. Third place went to the team of Panjab University campus while SD College, Sector 32, attained fourth place.

PU rowers shine

Rowers of Panjab University, Chandigarh cornered glory by winning seven gold medals and one bronze medal in the All-India Inter-Varsity Rowing Championship held at Kolkata from November 2 to 5. PU women rowers bagged four gold medals while men got three gold medals and a bronze medal.

Gold medals in women were won by Gurnoor Kaur in single scull, Gurnoor and Gurpreet kaur in double scull, Ramanpreet Kaur and Kirandeep Kaur in coxless pairs while Pooja, Kirandeep, Ramanpreet, Gurpreet and Kamalpreet won gold medal in coxed fours.

In the men section, gold medals were won by Vikinder Kumar in single scull, Karaj Singh and Gurpal Singh in coxless pairs and team of Vipan, Gaurav, Karaj, Gurpal and Jagdeep in coxed fours. Bronze medal was won by Vipan and Jagdeep in double scull.

Shivalik Trophy

The UT Cricket Association is organising its annual Shivalik Trophy for boys at the Sector 16 Cricket stadium from November 19. An entry fee of Rs 600 per team will be charged . Entries can be sent in association's office- Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on all working days.

The last date of submitting the entries is November 16.

1,200 students take part in cycle race

Chandigarh, November 9
Winning is not all that important but it is the participation which is more vital. Carrying this Olympic message, more than 1,200 students of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, today took part in a cycle race with distance ranging from 3 km to 12 km.

Children wearing their respective house sports kits were enthusiastic about the participation in the event as every participant was awarded points to increase the house tally. The five houses which took part were: Tagore, Aitchison, Ranjit, Patiala and Nalagarh.

The inter-house event was organised by the school in association with the Old Yadavindrian Association (OYA). All along the route, staff of the school acted as marshals to monitor the race.

The running trophy was also donated by the OYA and it was awarded to Patiala House. Ranjit House and Aitchison House came second and third, respectively.

Results: girls (under-11) — Akanksha (Class V) 1, Shivneet (Class V) 2, Neelam (Class V) 3; under-13 — Harkiran (Class VI) 1, Seonwha (Class VII) 2 and Jogman (Class VII) 3; under-15 — Jairoop (Class IX)1, Seonhe (Class X) 2 and Divya (Class IX) 3; above-15 — Manpreet (Class XI)1, Geetika (Class X) 2 and Divya (ClassXI) 3.

Boys: under-12 — Rajvinder (Class VI) 1, Manmohan (Class VII) 2 and Gurbir (Class VII)3; under-12 — Subhkaram (Class IX)1, Raghav (Class VII) 2 and Himmat (Class VI)3; under-16 — Abhideep (Class XI) 1, Harsimran (Class IX) 2 and Mandeep (Class XII) 3; above-16 — Mandeep (Class XII)1, Harvinder (Class XII) 2 and Jai Sekhon (Class XII) 3.

Sites marked for firecracker sale

Panchkula, November 9
The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Cr PC, on the sale of crackers in congested areas and announced sites for the purchase.

The District Magistrate, Ms Neelam P. Kasni, has directed that fire crackers can be sold only at the sites earmarked for Apni Mandi in Sectors 14 and 16, near Parade Ground in Sector 5, side parking of the showroom in Sector 20 and Sector 21. In Barwala, the administration has allowed the sale in the grounds of Government Senior Secondary School, at Government College in Kalka, at Subhash Stadium in Raipur Rani, near Khakhi Shah Peer Mazaar and near the market of HMT at Pinjore.
