7 get life sentence for triple murder
Ludhiana, October 27
Holding seven persons of Sunet village guilty of murdering three persons of the same village over a land dispute, the Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Indrejit Kaushik, today sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment and also imposed on them a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

Farmers smother city with smog

Fresh scrap containers arrive, police wary
Ludhiana, October 27
The city police and officials here are in a fix over the fresh arrival of over 20 containers of scrap, suspected to contain explosives, imported from the West Asia. The containers have come just when a special team of the Punjab Armed Police Battalion had finished searching and segregating explosives from scrap contained in seven sealed containers.

MC puts off date for receiving tenders

Even as the Municipal Commissioner, Mr S.K. Sharma, has ordered an inquiry into the alleged selective distribution of tender forms for development works in the city valued at around Rs 16 crore after BJP and SAD councillors raised the issue earlier this week, the controversy refuses to die down.

The Department of History of Guru Nanak Girls College organised an extension lecture today. The resource person was a reader from Panjab University, Dr Veena Sachdeva. The topic of the seminar was “Political organisation of Punjab during the 18th century.”

Gurpreet wins painting contest
Ludhiana, October 27
Nine-year-old Gurpreet, student of Class IV in Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, is the only winner from Punjab among the 24 winners of a painting competition organised by McDonald’s India as part of the World Children’s Week celebrations. These children’s paintings have been printed on greeting cards and calendars to be sold across McDonald’s restaurants in North India. At a ceremony held recently in Delhi to honour the winners Gurpreet had the opportunity to meet other 23 winners. Former Miss India and social activist Nafisa Ali was the chief guest.

Paddy procurement almost complete: DC

The paddy procurement in the district has almost been completed. Till date, 17,157,15 metric tonnes of paddy has been purchased from 100 mandis against 15,07628 metric tonnes last year.
