HC questions release of impounded vehicle

Mr Justice Amar Dutt of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the UT police to tell the court on whose orders the vehicle belonging to Amritpal Singh, reportedly a son of a senior judicial officer, which was impounded for various traffic rules violations, was released.

Hooting and an unruly audience had the authorities of the host college on their toes as the third day of the Panjab University Zonal Youth Festival saw a heavy turnout of students at DAV College here today. A handful of policemen at the college seemed helpless to manage the crowd.

Having lost all hope of two-month-old Mursleen’s survival, Shamima now is full of gratitude for the PGI doctors and the Chandigarh Rotary Pacemaker Bank which donated the dual chamber pacemaker, costing nearly Rs 2 lakh for the child’s heart.

UT Finance Secretary gets 10 more days

The UT Finance Secretary, Mr Karan Avtar Singh, will continue to work in Chandigarh for at least 10 more days as he has to present Chandigarh’s case before the Union Finance Ministry for the next financial year’s budgetary  allocation.

Artificial leg that can be programmed
Chandigarh, October 27
City-based Deep Artificial Limb Centre has provided 35-year-old Rakesh with an artificial leg. His leg was amputated in an accident six months ago. It is “North India’s first above-knee artificial leg.

9 sites marked for cracker sale
Mohali, October 27
Nine sites in various parts of the town have been earmarked for the sale of crackers in connection with Divali. According to orders issued by the District Magistrate, Ropar, Ms Seema Jain, under Section 144 of the CrPc, no person shall store, exhibit or sell any fire crackers or explosive materials used in the festival except at the sites earmarked for the purpose.

Woman falls off bus, dies

A 45-year-old woman died today after she fell off a bus on the road separating Sector 17 and 18. The police said Jito Devi of Kherianwali Lehi village in Panchkula district boarded a Haryana Roadways (HR) bus at a bus stop.

Joginder Singh, a resident of Dosanj Khurd village in Jalandhar district, reported to the police that his Maruti car (PB-08-T-3300) was stolen from the Rock Garden parking. The police said the complainant asked Mohinder Singh, who issued him the parking ticket, about his car.

House burgled
Zirakpur, October 27
Thieves broke into the house of Mr Naresh Sharma, an employee of The Tribune Trust, in Govind Vihar Colony of Bartana village near here and reportedly decamped with Rs 10,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 10,000.

Inter-school contests end on sour note

The three-day finals of the inter-school educational competitions organised by the Punjab School Education Board ended on a sour note today, with participants of one school raising slogans against board officials alleging ‘‘partiality’’ in judging a particular event. The issue was sorted out only after the intervention of the Minister for Education, Punjab, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, who was the chief guest on the occasion.

Exercise to bust stress

Pain of Partition
The inexpressible pain of Partition came alive in a Punjabi play, “Masiha” at Tagore Theatre on Wednesday. One of the few classics on Partition, the play was presented by eminent dramatist Gursharn Singh and his troupe on the opening day of the two-day theatre festival. The play revolves around a school master, Ustadji (Arun Bansal) whose sister is left in Pakistan.

 While Ustadji waits for her on the Indian side of the border, she is exploited physically and mentally on the other side.
