ASHRAM: Mr Sharvan Kumar, sanchalak, Nishkam Sewa Samiti, here on Monday said an ashram near Ludhiana was going to be set up for mentally challenged grown up girls. Speaking at the 12th annual function of the samiti, he said service of mankind was the best way of worship to God and stressed upon the people to come forward in aid of the needy and the helpless.

ORGANISED: A seminar on obesity was organised by the local branch of the Indian Medical Association here on Monday. Dr Amrit Sethi, president of the association, said sedentary habits and rich diet were the contributory factors to obesity. Daily exercise, brisk walking, cycling, and yoga were the best way to stay fit, he added.

CONSTITUTED: The executive committee of the Punjab Law Forum has decided to reconstitute the local district unit. Mr Chander Mohan Ruby, state secretary of the forum said here on Monday Mr Mahesh Chaudhary and Ms Pushpinder Randhawa were appointed president and secretary, respectively, of the district forum.

Gurdaspur
ARRESTED: The police has arrested Sakattar Singh, Sikkandar Singh, Palwinder Kaur and Balwinder Kaur of the Mehta area, on a complaint of Ms Paramjit Kaur. She alleged that they had duped her on the pretext of getting a job for her brother-in-law in the Forest Department. She allegedly paid them Rs 2,39,000 for the purpose. However, neither his brother-in-law got the job nor they returned the money.

Hoshiarpur
SCHEME: The Planning Commission is going to adopt Hoshiarpur district under the National Development Scheme for overall development of the district. This was stated by Mr Romesh Chander, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab, at Bringly village, about 90 km from here, on Monday.

Moga
HELD: Balwinder Singh, Jeet Singh, Tony, Kirpal Singh and Sajjan Singh of Redwa village were arrested by the police here on Monday. They had allegedly killed Mohinder Singh, a farmer, over a land dispute. A case has been registered.

SMART CLASS: Educomp, a leading education company unveiled its technology programme- Smart class , at a conference held for school principals in Patiala city on Tuesday. Smart class is designed to empower teachers with technology inside classrooms. A knowledge centre set up at the school acts as the nerve centre for all teaching and learning in school. It is connected through campus-wide network to all existing class rooms which are converted to technology enabled classrooms.

Tarn Taran
SUICIDE: Ranjit Singh (54), a resident of Dinewal village, committed suicide by jumping before a train here on Monday night. Domestic tension was said to be the cause of the extreme step. The police has registered a case.

AMBALA
SOUGHT: The Citizens Council on Tuesday demanded that the district administration must ensure that there was neither storage nor sale of crackers within residential and commercial localities. Citizens Council chairman Dr N.C. Jain said the storage of crackers should be in isolated areas to prevent mishap. He said the sale must take place only in areas where there is a lot of open space.

SURVEY: Income Tax survey took place at three places in Ambala Sadar on Tuesday. The owners of the establishment maintained that an income tax survey was being carried out and they were cooperating with the authorities. Income Tax officials arrived at a computer centre and fashion designing centre. They also arrived at a jewellery shop in Sarafa Bazar.

ORGANISED: A valedictory function was organised for a refresher course in Business Studies by the Academic Staff College of Kurukshetra University here on Monday. Prof. A.D.N. Bajpai, Vice-Chancellor, A.P.S. University, Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), emphasised upon the social and ethical aspects of economics as a science. Prof. S.L.Gupta, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management, presided. Prof. V.N. Attri, chairman and coordinator of the course, said the course had started on October 5 with the assistance of the University Grants Commission.

Sirsa
KILLED: Manoj Kumar (12), son of a brick-kiln worker, was crushed to death by a bus in Bhambhur village here on Monday. The boy was playing on the roadside and suddenly came on the road and was hit by a bus.

Sonepat
KILLED: A youth, Krishan, was seriously injured when his bicycle was hit by a car on the Gohana-Jind road, near Gohana town, 35 km from here, on Tuesday. He was admitted to the community health centre but later shifted to the PGIMS, Rohtak. However, he succumbed to his injuries. The police has registered a case.

INJURED: Six persons, including five women were injured when a jeep carrying them overturned near Gohana town, 35 km from here on Tuesday. The injured were Jagdish, Kamlesh, Vimla, Shanti, Savitri and Man Bhari, all residents of Jalalpura village in Jind district. The driver fled from the scene. The police has registered a case against him.

THREATENED: The Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dharam Singh faction) has threatened to intensify its on-going agitation to press their demand for the early completion of the SYL canal in Punjab territory. Mr Ranbir Singh Malik, president of the district unit of the union, said here on Tuesday that they would convene a maha panchayat to chalk out its future course of action on the issue.

ARRESTED: Narinder, Satish and Parvesh of Murthal village were arrested by the police here on Tuesday in connection with the alleged attempt to murder Hemant and his wife on October 19.
