Rest best for expecting mothers
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 26
Taking rest during pregnancy leads to the birth of healthier babies as the foetus gains weight by around 10 to15 gm. Highlighting the need for taking proper care of expectant mothers, the head of the Department of Neo-natology at the PGI, Dr Anil Narang, while interacting with the mediapersons said adequate rest taken by pregnant women and the intake of nutritious diet leads to the birth of healthy babies. It would also reduce the neo-natal mortality rate.

It was also revealed that of the 2.5 million children born each year in India, 4.5 per cent die after birth. “Nearly 50 per cent of the neo-natal deaths take place on the first day of birth, followed by deaths of new-borns in the first week and first month of their birth,” said Dr Narang.

The doctor said, “The baby must come out crying for which proper ante-natal regular check up is needed.” Cold and infections can lead to severe complications among new-borns. The doctors said there was a need to have a specialised department rather than merging it with Paediatrics Department.

Dr Narang also briefed about the four-day annual convention of the National Neo-natology Forum scheduled to begin at the PGI from Thursday. Around 800 experts from India and abroad are expected to take part.
