Awareness programme for farmers
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 20
The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a credit-linked subsidy scheme on rural storages. This has been with a view to improve the post-harvest management of food grains. To appraise farmers about this development, the Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI) organised a three-day awareness programme on construction of rural godowns that concluded here today. This was stated by Dr S.P.S. Brar, Director, PAMETI.

Officials from various departments, including the Directorate of Marketing Inspection (DMI), Central Warehousing Corporation, the FCI and PAU, addressed the farmers.

Representatives of NABARD and other banks briefed farmers about the legal framework and documentation required for availing themselves of subsidy/finance for construction of godowns.

The scheme also extends for renovation and extension of existing godowns. Farmers were told about methods of stacking goods, pest control and disinfection, documentation of storage, quality assurance and handling of produce. They were also taken on a field visit to rural godowns already constructed by farmers.

According to Dr S.P.S. Brar, the storage facility at the village level enabled farmers to enhance their holding capacity, while maintaining quality. It would also lesson the government burden of procuring and storing the agricultural produce, he said.

The programme was sponsored by the National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM) Jaipur.

Overhaul Ayurveda office, plead practitioners
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 20
The affairs of the District Ayurvedic and Unani Office, Ludhiana, are being run by a senior clerical official. There are 42 ayurvedic dispensaries in the district with at least one ayurvedic or Unani doctor posted there. All of them have to report to a senior clerk as there is no district ayurvedic and Unani officer here.

Ayurvedic experts here have been seeking overhauling of the department. They pointed out that the department was being given a raw deal.

Dr Jawahar Lal, who was earlier posted as the District Ayurvedic and Unani Officer, was transferred to Chandigarh. Since then the department is being handled by the office superintendent.

An ayurveda practitioner said. “It is a tragedy that ayurveda, which is now being accepted as one of the premier medical sciences in the world, is getting shabby treatment in its native land”.

Ayurveda and Unani Officers posted in various dispensaries are irked over the fact that all communication coming from the district office is signed by the office superintendent who is “officiating” as the district officer though he is neither competent nor qualified for the job. They said they had been receiving letters signed “for” by the superintendent.

Besides 42 ayurvedic and Unani dispensaries in the district, there are several ayurveda practitioners and ayurvedic drug manufacturers here. For them, it is difficult to negotiate with a person who has no background of the field. We have no option but to explain to him whether he understands it or not”, said an ayurvedic doctor.
