Three Loni houses looted at midnight
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, October 13
Armed dacoits robbed three houses in New Vikas Nagar Colony, Loni, and decamped with cash, jewellery and valuables worth lakhs from the houses at midnight on Monday.

Those who resisted them were beaten up with lathis, iron rods and seriously injured. The victims have been admitted to Delhi hospitals. Though the police reached only after the robbers had done the damage, no FIR has been registered by the Loni police.

These dacoities were committed in the wake of a dacoity in Raj Nagar Colony two days ago. The whole area is in grip of panic.

Six armed robbers had descended in New Vikas Colony at 3 am on October 11 and raided Rajkumar’s house who is a wholesale vegetable seller in Shahdara. Rajkumar and his son Pawan had already left for vegetable market by the time the robbers attacked.

The intruders demanded cash and jewellery by putting revolvers on the head of his daughter Rekha and daughter in-law Rakhi, sleeping in one room. From the other room, Rajkumar’s wife Prabhawatti and second son, Vijainder’s shrieks were heard. When Rekha went to the adjoining room, she saw three robbers attacking her brother and mother with lathis, knives and rods. They told Rekha to tell her mother and brother to keep quiet and hand over all valuables to them.

As they threatened to kidnap Rekha, she quietly handed over all valuables to the bandits.

The robbers are reported to have collected Rs 80,000, gold and valuables.

The police post advised Rajkumar to take the wounded to SGTB Hospital and lodge the report with Loni police station.

Later, the robbers had raided the house of Vinod Kumar Gupta and looted Rs 20,000 worth of valuables from there. When some women on the top floor of the house bolted the doors from inside and raised the alarm; the robbers tried to smash the doors with bricks.

They took Rs 5000 from the house of Kalicharan after injuring the inmates with lathis and sarya. While leaving, the dacoits had bolted all the doors from outside.

Farmers rally for compensation
Our Correspondent

Greater Noida, October 13
Farmers under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha organised a massive rally at Surajpur Collectorate to focus on village development, deteriorating law and order and to demand land compensation at Rs 300 per sq mt.

A memorandum addressed to the District Magistrate was handed over to the Additional District Magistrate. The district chief of Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha, Nathi Singh said farmers have reached starvation level due to natural calamities and the government’s anti-village policies. The farmers have been driven to suicide. Foreign companies and the grain imported from other countries have ruined agriculture.

The governments of the day give only tall promises that too with an eye on their vote bank. The farmers are being pushed into jails on the pretext of non-payment of loans while the prices of all commodities which the farmers need and use are rising, Nathi Singh said.

With rural roads and electricity in a bad shape, the lax law and order situation has so terrorised the farmers that they are afraid to go out and work in their farms. The administration is maintaining a studied silence in this connection, he alleged. In his speech, Satbir Bhatti alleged that the government had not provided any relief to the farmers so far despite the fact that the problems of the farmers have multiplied. The Chief Minister’s promise of Rs 300 land compensation has also proved to be an empty assurance so far, Mr Bhatti added.

Amity welfare schemes for the needy in rural areas
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 13
To provide assistance to the destitute in the villages, Amity and Voluntary Health Education and Rural Development Society (VHERDS) are initiating rural development programmes by way of a holistic approach promoted by Swami Sankracharya of Kanchi.

The secular organisation, VHERDS, was established in 1985 to focus attention on the health, education and development of the needy all over rural India.

The basic thrust is now on the concept of ‘PURA’, which means Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas.

President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has great faith in PURA and is of the opinion that this alone can bring development in the rural areas.

For this purpose, VHERDS has expanded its role in North India, for which Dr Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Chairman, Amity University, has been chosen by Kanchi Shankrachacharya to take care of the activities in the Northern Region and provide logistic support to this organisation.

Amity launched its Delhi office of VHERDS last month and a meeting was held to discuss the objectives of this centre which were spelt out by Mr T P Radhakrishnan.

Dr Chauhan expressed his gratitude to Swami Shankracharya. “We are engaged in implementing a number of schemes education, health, electricity, security, etc. which aim at the uplift of the rural people,” said Dr Chauhan.

The Amity Group will organise development programmes to be implemented through multifaceted strategies. The group will reach out to the most disadvantaged sections of villages of Noida such as Rohillapur, Sahpur Govardhanpur, Garhi, Bhaktawarpur and Raipur.

Dr Chauhan said high priority is being accorded to provide primary and vocational education, health facilities, training programmes, electricity, clean drinking water, security, etc.

Mr T P Radhakrishnan, VHERDS Secretary-General commented, “Education is seen as a catalyst in creating the opportunities outside the villages and the Amity Group will be helping in such development programmes. There is a need to build a number of higher secondary schools in these identified villages and security problems have to be tackled seriously.”

Lauding the efforts of both organisations, Mr V Suresh, former chairman of Hudco, appreciated the self-confidence of the villagers and stressed the need for better connectivity, vocational training, veterinary, general hospitals and total rural regeneration so that model villages could be created.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr A K Jain, SP Noida Police, assured the heads and representative of the villages that the plans and policies of the government are village-oriented, but the initiatives and funding by the private sectors will help Noida develop model villages.

Mr R S Gaharwar, Chief Development Officer, Noida Authority, highlighted the issues of water and electricity which need to be tackled and suggested that the village panchayats should create self-sufficient societies and encourage education so that a common villager is aware of his duties and rights. Collective efforts have to be made for the youths to awaken the masses.

DU recasts UG courses
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 13
After endless discussion and a seemingly never-ending meeting lasting more than 19 hours and spanning two days, the Academic Council (AC) of Delhi University has given its approval to the restructuring of under graduate programmes.

The AC has agreed to the restructuring of the BA (Hons.) programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences and the undergraduate Science courses, based on the reports of the two empowered committees constituted by the Vice-Chancellor. With the approved changes coming into effect from July 2005, students opting for BA (H) in Social Science and Humanities shall have to study four concurrent courses, which will replace the existing language and subsidiary courses and shall carry a total of 200 marks to be counted towards the final result. The total marks would be distributed equally among four designated courses – Concurrent, which include one compulsory language and any other language and three other courses opted for by the student out of a set of optional courses. Each student shall, in addition, choose one compulsory non-credit course in a language other than the one chosen by him or her as concurrent courses. Optional courses shall have two components, one inter-disciplinary and the other disciplinary.

The compulsory language courses shall be taught in the first year and the concurrent courses in the second year. The main courses shall be taught in all three as per the norms of the department. Students enrolled for Honours courses in language shall not be required to take a compulsory course in the same language. Instead, they can opt for four concurrent courses.

In the existing B.Sc (H) programmes subjects will remain unchanged. However, in Honours courses, where subsidiary subjects have not yet been integrated into the programme as credit courses, the same would be done in line with B.Sc (H) courses in Physics and Chemistry.

Teachers unhappy with restructuring
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 13
The ambitious restructuring of the existing B.A (H) courses in Social Sciences and B.Sc General courses has given rise to speculation as to whether the implementation of these courses would be as effortless as is being perceived.

While the opposition is more at the changes in the Science courses, the Commerce and Economics departments too have voiced reservations. Teachers point out that if the restructuring of the Social Sciences are aimed at advancement, the changes in the Sciences would lead to “confusion, increased workload for students and even an adverse effect on the acceptance of the courses”.

A number of teachers said that the fact that a first year student opting for B.Sc (General) course would be studying a common foundation course is an indication of “generalisation”, and are peeved at the lack of thought given to the infrastructural details.

“A students will have to study at least nine to 10 courses, which is an alarming number. The new course we fear would not just make the Science courses unpopular but can also increase the drop out rate. Students preparing for professional courses like Engineering and Medicine would opt for these courses and treat them as preparation ground,” complained Dr Inder Kapahi, President of the Nation Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF).

It was pointed out that with students having to study all subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Biology as in school, the undergraduate programme would see more students joining in to “brush up their knowledge”.

Further, “the students would be studying their main subject for just two years, the first year being a foundation course, which can become a drawback for those seeking to opt for further studies as most universities seek three year’s study of the main course as eligibility for a postgraduate course”, said Dr Kapahi.

It was also alleged that instead of vocationlisation and increasing practical knowledge, the courses eat into the share of practical classes.

“With these changes, the students would get less time for practical exams and what is the logic in asking students who have opted for Science to study a Humanities paper”, pointed out Dr S. S. Rathi, the former DUTA President.

Teachers are also unhappy that the Empowered Committee has failed to seek the response and participation of the teachers. “The committees had a few principals, but mostly professors, who are not in sync with a college student”, said Ms Neelam Rathi, member of the AC.

She added, “we have made suggestions that instead of reserving a lecture per week for communication skills, there should be at least three lectures in a week and that the workload should not be decreased in any department.”

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 13
The Outer Delhi MP, Mr Sajjan Kumar, has announced that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will construct an underground parking lot on a three acre land in Mehrauli village, where at present a dispensary is functioning.

He said that a parking lot is a long-standing demand of citizens of Mehrauli village, but authorities concerned had overlooked their demand. Since the Congress has come to power, it tried to identify a proper site for the purpose. After consultation with officials concerned and influential people of the area, it was decided that the plot of the dispensary could be used for this purpose. Initially, it was decided that half of the area of the dispensary should be used for parking and the rest of the area could be earmarked for the dispensary. Finally, it was decided that the dispensary would remain where its is. Instead, the parking lot would be underground.

The MP said that Mehrauli village had narrow streets and residents could not park their vehicles inside their houses or in front of the houses. They park their vehicles at a distance from their houses. Sajjan Kumar said that before the beginning of the Commonwealth Game in 2010, the road, which leads from Andheria More to police station Mehrauli, would be made of concrete.

The Leader of the House, Mr Satbir Singh, said that sewer lines had been constructed in Mehruali area, but there was no arrangement for supply of potable water. The MCD has given Rs one crore to the Delhi Jal Board to make arrangements for water supply in the village.
