Lecture on mental health
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 10
In the absence of traditional joint family system, people are coming to psychiatrists to seek answers even to their social problems. This was stated by psychiatrist Prof N.N. Wig, who delivered a lecture at Lala Rajpat Rai Bhavan on the occasion of World Mental Health day today.

He said the stigma attached to mental problems was gradually fading away. With the weakening of the social support system, people were turning to mental health professionals with problems related to broken marriages, unsuccessful love affairs, poor progress in studies, delinquent habits and drug abuse, he added.

Talking about the increasing prevalence of depression, he said according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depressive and mental disorders were set to emerge as the second largest burden of diseases in the world, next only to heart attacks.

“With the increase in the population of the old people, psychiatrists are seeing many more cases of dementia of Alzheimer’s disease. There is a need to promote positive mental health and prevent mental disorder by adopting a healthy lifestyle,” said Professor Wig.

Mr Onkar Chand of the Servants of the People Society welcomed the speaker and appreciated Professor Wig’s gesture of running biweekly free mental health clinic at Lala Lajpat Rai Bhavan for the past 10 years.
