Cricket trials on Oct 9

Chandigarh, October 6
Trials to select the Chandigarh under-17 cricket team will be held at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, on October 9 from 3 pm. The team will play in a tournament to be organised by the Haryana Cricket Association for the Rajinder Goel Trophy.

Surinder Singh Baijee, general secretary of the Chandigarh Cricket Association, said the cut-off date of birth was September 1, 1987. Players should bring original documents regarding date of birth, he said.

Athletics meet: The Chandigarh Sports Club will organise an inter-school athletics meet on October 16 and 17 at the Sports Complex, Sector 7-B. Players should report for the meet at the venue at 8.30 am on October 16.

The players’ list duly verified by the respective Principals should be forwarded to GP Pal or S.K. Joshi, athletics coach, Sports Complex, Sector 7-B, on or before October 12.

Events will be held in the under-10, under-14 and under-18 age groups for both boys and girls. This was stated in a press note issued by Manmohan Singh, vice-president, Chandigarh Sports Club.

DD disappoints cricket fans

For cricket lovers the start of the India-Australia test series were disappointed as telecast by Doordarshan was not upto the mark. Cable TV broadcasters were flooded with complaints of “ haziness”. The signal was corrected after cable operators called up Siti cable.

Cable TV operators said several people had not even tuned in the channel properly as it is rarely watched. In other places it was a problem of “earthing”. By afternoon the reception improved in the city.

Hans Raj school triumph

Chandigarh, October 6
A superb knock of 65 runs in just 59 deliveries by Manan Vohra helped Hans Raj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula, in defeating St John’s High School, Sector 26, by eight wickets in the St Kabir Trophy tie played here today at St Kabir School, Sector 26.

Earlier, St John’s won the toss and opted to bat first. Adhiraj Gulati scored 24 runs followed by Ranbir Singh who scored 21 runs. They scored 101 runs in 20 overs. Jatin Gupta claimed four wickets for 21 runs while Sajit Nagrath bagged two wickets for nine runs.

In reply, HPS opener Manan Vohra played a superb game and scored unbeaten 65 runs in just 59 deliveries which included three sixers and three boundaries. HPS boys achieved the target in 19.3 overs.

Brief scores — St John’s -26:101 runs all out in 20 overs (Adhiraj Gulati 24, Ranbir Singh 21, Jatin Gupta 4 for 21, Sajit Nagrath 2 for nine); and HPS, Panchkula: 104 runs for two in 19.3 overs (Manan Vohra 65 n.o., Azil Chhabra 15, Akshat Sharma 2 for 16).

In another tie, Mount Carmel School got the better of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, by six wickets.

Brief scores — St Stephen’s-45:106 runs for six in 20 overs (Hitesh 20 n.o., Jaspreet 22, Sanjeev Gupta 2 for 11, Karandeep 2 for 11); and Mount Carmel: 107 runs for seven in 17.1 overs (Nikhil 29 n.o., Karandeep 17, Mohit Bhardwaj 15).
