Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 3
Education Minister Harnam Dass Johar has exhorted the management of private medical institutions to provide quality medical facilities to the poor at affordable rates.

He was addressing a function after inaugurating a newly constructed operation theatre complex at Swami Vivekanand Swarag Ashram Trust in Model Town Extension here today.

The hospital has also installed a computerised image intensifier with a digital image processor which takes X-rays without any side effects and prepares the report on a CD, which can be produced for consultation in any hospital. Referring to the rising expenditure on the treatment of major diseases, Mr Johar said the poor patients could not afford the costs and had to just bear the trauma.

He said saints and gurus had taught us the virtue of service to the suffering humanity and we should educate our future generations regarding our cultural and social heritage.

He called upon the voluntary and social organisations to chalk out social welfare programmes like free education to the poor children and better health facilities in the slum areas.

He appreciated the services of Mr Keshav Ram, a local industrialist, who has donated a substantial amount for the construction of the hospital, and appealed to other industrialists to follow the example. He announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the trust.
