The UT Administration has thrown cold water over owners’ plans to convert some of the existing cinema halls in the city into multiplexes. Official sources indicated that the Finance Department had taken the view that no change in the architectural control would be permitted in the city centre comprising the whole of Sector 17.

The Jathedar of Akal Takht today asked the Sikhs to boycott those who were trying to create divisions in the community. Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti, who was speaking on the concluding day of a four-day Roohani Gurmat Samagam at Balongi village, near here, said supporters of persons like Gurbaksh Singh Kala Afghana and Joginder Singh, Editor of Spokesman, both of whom had been excommunicated from the panth, were still trying to misinterpret Gurbani.

CTU driver assaulted
Panchkula, October 3.
Mr Surmukh Singh, a CTU driver, and a close relative of the Vice-President of the Panchkula Municipal Council, Ms Kuljeet Waraich, was assaulted by a group of five men near Kohni Sahib Gurdwara in Mansa Devi Complex today.

Scooter thief held
Chandigarh, October 3
A 16-year-old auto thief was arrested today from Sector 7 along with a stolen scooter. The thief, who is a Sector 9 resident, told the police that he had stolen another motorcycle from Sector 8 today. He was sent to a juvenile home.

Youth commits suicide
Panchkula, October 3
A 23-year-old youth, Sunil Kumar, committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at his home in Bitna Colony, Pinjore, late last night. The father of the victim has informed the police that after having dinner last night, Sunil went to his room.

Role of NSS volunteers lauded

A 10-day NSS camp on the theme “Youth for Swastha” was organised by the NSS unit under the guidance of Ms Harjinder Kaur. As many as 150 boys and 65 girl volunteers participated in the camp. Dr M.S. Bains, coordinator of the NSS, Panjab University, presided over the valedictory function and lauded the role of the NSS volunteers.

Haryana achieves leprosy elimination target

Haryana has achieved the target set by the World Bank in the leprosy elimination programme for having one case of leprosy per 10,000 population within the stipulated time of five years. The state also earned a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for achieving this target.

They knew not about winning, yet they sprinted to victory
It was a special sports event. For special children. Their faces flushed with the sheer joy of holding the centre-stage, the children tried to make sense of it all. Many of them could not grasp the import of the hullabaloo - men and women milling around, cajoling teachers and parents, the chalky tracks, the loud claps. But they somehow instinctively knew that it was for them, as a 14-year-old boy Shangu told us with a broad, knowing grin that he would run fast in the race.
