3 top militants killed

3 top militants killed

Jammu, September 25
Three top foreign militants, including a commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), were killed by security forces in an encounter at Darah, near Thanamandi, in Rajouri district this evening.

Official sources said a gun battle at Darah started at 4 pm when militants fired at a security forces patrol.

When reports last came in, three militants, including LeT commander Abu Zakum of Pakistan, had been shot dead by the troops. Three AK rifles and a large quantity of ammunition were seized from them.

Troops were continuing searches in the area, the sources added.

Srinagar: Six persons, including two militants, were killed in the Kashmir valley overnight, official sources said today.

The sources said security forces killed a militant at Hangulbuch Shopian in Pulwama district in an encounter today. The encounter happened after a search party was attacked by militants.

One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were found from the slain militant.

In a case of mistaken identity, security forces killed a “bakerwal”, Abdul Gani Khan, near grid station Chandoora in Badgam district early this morning.

Khan was running to join other “bakerwals” when security forces mistook him for a militant and shot him dead.

The body of Ghulam Mohammad Malla was recovered at Ganderbal last night.

A driver Fayaz Ahmad, who was injured in a grenade blast at Anantnag bus stand on September 22, died in the hospital today. Militants entered the house of Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Rashid at Sanal and shot dead his son Irfan Rashid last night.

Security forces also gunned down a militant in an encounter at Chak Narwar Banihal today. — UNI

Photojournalists beaten up

Srinagar, September 25
Two photojournalists were hospitalised after they were beaten up by the police during the coverage of a demonstration here this afternoon. They include Amin War of The Tribune and Rafiq Maqbool of the APTN.

They were covering the demonstration by a group of youths through the Jawaharnagar area here today. While returning a group of protesters was intercepted by the police and thrashed.

The photographers were also stopped and beaten up.

"We told them that we are news photographers and going back to office but they did not listen to us and started to cane charge", said Rafiq Maqbool. They received cane blows and were hospitalised.

The DGP has ordered an inquiry into the incident and appointed DIG Police, Kashmir range, to investigate the matter.

The incident took place when scores of youths attacked hotels and restaurants here, asked them to close down the cabin system in the hotels as a social reform measure.

Panel proposals not rejected, says Peerzada

Jammu, September 25
The PCC president and Rural Development Minister, Mr Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, today said that a local daily had misquoted him and he had not rejected the recommendations of the Wazir Commission report for creating three districts in the Jammu division.

Mr Sayeed, talking to mediapersons here, said the implementation of the report was on top priority.

He said what he had told a mediaperson at Srinagar was that the coalition government would give to the people more than what was recommended by the commission.

Appan Menon award for Jammu scribe

The 2004-05 Appan Menon Memorial Award has gone to Luv Puri, a Jammu-based staff reporter of The Hindu.

This was announced by Mr Krishna Menon, Managing Trustee of Appan Menon Memorial Trust.

The award is in recognition of work done by the journalist on tribal societies of the state.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Mehbooba hails Indo-Pak talks

Both mainstream and separatist political parties have hailed the joint statement of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf, to explore all options for resolving the Kashmir issue.

The PDP president and MP, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, expressed satisfaction over the statement. She said though this was a welcome step, being the first of such kind, both New Delhi and Islamabad should start working on exploring the options.
