GMCH to have hand surgery unit

Chandigarh, September 12
The Department of Orthopaedic surgery at GMCH, Sector 32, is developing a hand surgery unit. The department has invited Dr Neils O. Thomsen from Sweden and Dr Annemarie from Denmark to operate upon patients and deliver special lectures on hand surgery on Monday. Dr Thomsen will also operate a case of neglected tendon injury at GMCH and will speak on “Nerve grafting.” Dr Annemarie will deliver a lecture on “Setting up of Trauma Centre — Copenhagen experience.”

CARES camp: Eye healthcare and gynaecological checkup camp was organised by Citizens Association for Relief Education and Service (CARES) at New Janta Colony today. A number of specialist doctors attended to the patients at the camp.

Charges denied: Mr M.K. Sharma, a former Food Inspector with the UT Health Department called the charges framed against him as totally false. While talking to the mediapersons here today. Mr Sharma was chargesheeted a day before his retirement on June 30 this year for possessing a bogus certificate of Sanitary Inspector. Mr Sharma had completed 33 years of service in the department before being chargesheeted on the basis of a complaint.

MOHALI
Blood donation camp:
A blood donation camp was organised by Nirankari devotees at Nirankari satsang Bhawan, Phase VI, Mohali today. About 308 units of blood were donated at the camp. The blood collection team comprising 20 members headed by Dr Usha Rao from PGI took care of pre-donation and post-donation tests of the donors. The camp was inaugrated by Mr Kirpa Sagar, a former senior officer of the Indian Information Service. — OC

PANCHKULA
Health camp:
A free multi-speciality health check up camp was organised by Rotary Club, Panchkula, today. Dr Satyveer Choudhary, Civil Surgeon, Panchkula, inaugurated the camp. As many as 260 patients were checked up at the camp. Medicines were given to all patients free of cost. Rotarian N. Paul Sabharwal briefed patients about the role of Rotary in community services and appreciated the cooperation extended by various specialist doctors and Rotary Club membes in conducting the camp. Dr Satveer Choudhry, Civil Surgeon, said the Government of Haryana had announced that in order to ensure safety of mother and child all deliveries would be performed at all general hospitals in Haryana free of cost and the medicines would also be provided free of cost.

Oscar hogs the limelight

Chandigarh, September 12
Oscar Bansal, a student of Class X of Vivek High School, Sector 38, Chandigarh, bagged three titles in the 16th Chandigarh State Badminton Championships, which concluded at the Sector 42 badminton hall, here today.

Oscar, a trainee of the Panjab University Coaching Centre, Sector 14, was declared the player of the tournament. The men singles title was given to Ashish Sharma, who defeated Pawan Malik in straight games. During the past two days, Pawan had defeated many seeded players on way to final. Ashish later partnered Deepak Sidhu to clinch the men’s double title and his second title when they overpowered Vivek Sharma and Gurjit in three games.

H. Sarda of Panjab University won the women singles title for the fifth time consecutively and then the women’s doubles title. But for both these wins, she had to defeat Isha Sharma. Other players who bagged double crown in this meet were Purnica, Tushar and Harleen.

Former national player Virinder Mehta of the Haryana Vidut Prasaran Nigam paired with M.P. Dogra to bag the veterans doubles title. In another category for veteran doubles, Col Raj Parmar and Maj Rajiv Mehta emerged winners.

Mr M.P. Singh, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, was the chief guest. He later complimented the Chandigarh Badminton Association for promoting badminton.

Rohan, Shamal win mass start races

Rohan Kakar of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, and Shamal of Government Model High School, Sector 29, emerged winners in 10-km mass start race for boys u-16 and 5-km mass start race for boys u-14, respectively, in the Kalvin Chandigarh Road Cycling Championships held at the Sukhna Lake on Sunday. More than 50 cyclists took part in the meet organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association.

Results: 7 lap Cretirium race: Men: Ajit Singh 1, Ajay Trehan 2 and Parmod 3.

10-km mass start race: boys u-16: Rohan Kakar 1, Deepinder Singh 2 and Kapil 3.

5-km start race for boys: u-14: Shamal 1, Arnit Yadav 2 and Shubh Preet Singh 3.

The association will hold the Chandigarh State Mountain Bike Cycling Championships on October 2 where cyclists for the National Mountain Bike Championships will be selected.

Table tennis meet

Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, and DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, bagged the Panjab University Inter-College Table Tennis Championships in the women and men’s section played at the university on Sunday.

In the women’s section, the MCM DAV College for Women was placed second, while the A.S. College for Women, Khanna, third and PU campus fourth.

In men’s section, PU campus won second place, SGGS College, Sector 26, third and R.S.D. College, Ferozepore, fourth.

Basketball tourney

Panjab Engineering College beat Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, 76-30 in the Panjab University Inter-College Zonal Basketball Tournament.

Softball meet

In the Panjab University Inter-College Softball (Men) Tournament, DAV College, Sector 10, defeated PU campus 2-0; SCD Government College, Ludhiana, defeated SGGS College, Sector 26, 8-6; PU campus defeated SCD Government College, Ludhiana, 7-1; and DAV College, Sector 10, beat SGGS College, Sector 26.

Abhipsha Thakur of GNIMT, Ludhiana, and Rohit Dhir of SBSCET, Ferozepore, were declared the best swimmers among the women and men, respectively, in the Punjab Technical University Inter-College Swimming Championship which concluded at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College here today.
