Management colleges poor in retaining teachers
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 17
“Ludhiana has about four colleges offering MBA, MCA courses under Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. Though these colleges are getting good response for admissions, yet the reputation of these colleges among the students is giving down. The good admission rate is mainly because of Ludhiana being a metro city. Recently the Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE) got its name registered in Limca Book of Records. Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town, was declared Best Chapter by Indian society for Technical Education, Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT), Civil Lines owes its success for being an old college. But the real face of the story is that the students are facing many problems in these colleges. The biggest problem they are confronting is the frequent change of teachers” says Harpreet Singh MBA a postgraduate diploma holder in journalism.

He further says that almost 10 teachers of GNIMT, two teachers of PCTE, one senior most teacher of GGNIMT recently left their jobs within a span of one year. Before the students develop a close relationship with a teacher, he or she leaves the job. The students face new teachers in every semester. As per students, some of the teachers were good in teaching and other activities, but they leave the jobs because of job dissatisfaction.

The colleges have to suffer a lot on this account as it is difficult to train a new teacher every time. One big factor of the teachers leaving the jobs seems to be poor pay structure. These colleges are not giving full pay scale with basic, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and medical as per university or government rules, though it is mandatory. It is to be noted that Ludhiana even being a metro city like Bangalore and Hyderabad, could not come up on the IT map of the country. The major reason behind is poor interaction between industry and institutes.

Non-govt colleges: A general body meeting of the Non-government Colleges Management Federation was held at the Guru Nanak College for Women, Model Town, Ludhiana, on Wednesday. The House unanimously elected Mr S.C. Sanwalka, president of the federation for Punjab and Chandigarh.

The members viewed with great concern the reported move of the state government to scrap 95 per cent grant-in-aid scheme and to replace it by another so-called 100 per cent payment scheme without taking the managements of non-government colleges into confidence. The house was of the opinion that the scheme was discriminating and is unviable.

The house resolved to urge upon the Chief Minister and the Higher Education Minister to immediately open a dialogue with the representatives of the federation and the Federation of Association of Principals of non-govt affiliated colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh. Eminent financial crisis will engulf these institutions if the govt goes ahead without introducing amendments like covering all the unaided posts of the aided colleges and extend this scheme to the 47 unaided colleges of the state.
