Infiltration picking up: Gen Prasad Udhampur, June 17 This was stated here today by the GOC-in-C, Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, after laying a wreath at the war memorial on the occasion of the 33rd raising day of the Northern Command. He said earlier the infiltration was low due to cold weather. Surveillance on the borders had been strengthened to prevent infiltration. He said the Army had foiled 18 attempts of infiltration in the past five months in which 41 terrorists were killed. The General described the increased incidents of attacks on civilians as a sign of desperation among terrorists. The terrorist attacks on the Army and the security forces had reduced. He said the Army had good success in the anti-insurgency operations during the past six months. Nearly 550 militants were killed or made to surrender. The General said fencing of the Line of Control (LoC) would be completed by June 30. Modern gadgets had been installed to detect the movement of militants. Regarding the de-mining operation, he said almost 99.6 per cent work had been completed so far and a compensation of Rs 80 crore had been disbursed among farmers. About 500 mines were yet to be removed. However, the General denied the reports that certain Kargil peaks were under Pakistan occupation. He said the Army would not allow the Hill Kaka area in Poonch district to be used again by the terrorists. The Gujjars and Bakarwals were allowed to go to certain mountain pastures with their cattle this summer and the Army was providing them medical care. Two former commanders of the Northern Command, Lieut-Gen H.C. Rai (retd) and Lieut-Gen M.L. Chibber (retd), also participated in the celebrations. Prior to Independence, the headquarters of the Northern Command were located at Rawalpindi. After the Partition, the command headquarters were allocated to Pakistan, and in India new headquarters, designated as Western Command, are located at Shimla to look after the northern borders with Pakistan. |
Vohra calls on Mirwaiz Srinagar, June 17 Mr Vohra met Mirwaiz at his uncle’s residence at Nishat on the
outskirts of the city here this afternoon. He arrived in a private car to escape the attention of the horde of journalists waiting outside and left within five
minutes. Maulvi Mushtaq was shot at and seriously injured by militants last month and he succumbed to his injuries on June 7. After the meeting, Mirwaiz said the Centre’s interlocutor had come to condole his uncle’s death and there was nothing political about it. “No. He did not come with any message from the government. Nor did we discuss politics today. We are still in mourning and it is not the right time to talk about anything else,” the founding chairman of the Amalgam, which has held two rounds of talks with the Centre, said. Hectic backstage activity is going on here as well as in the national capital to arrange for a third round of talks between the government and
the Hurriyat. “I am here as part of India-European Union round table. But there is a possibility of meeting Hurriyat leaders at their convenience,” he said. — PTI |

Mr Kant, who along with RSS Delhi media centre in charge Balram Mishra and Haryana chief Susheel Kumar visited Leh to take part in the festival, said he was disappointed due to the change in dates. “Hundreds of tourists and people like us, whose sentiments are involved with Sindhu Darshan, were virtually disappointed and hurt by Union Minister of Tourism Renuka Chaudhary’s decision,” he said. The RSS leader demanded that the festival should be telecast live for the benefit of the people.

Notice to Amarnath board officer Jammu, June 17 Taking cognizance of a public interest litigation filed by A.N. Sharma, President of the Shri Amarnath Seva Dal, Mr Justice S.K. Gupta issued the notices and directed the registry to list the case before the vacation judge. Mr Sharma, in his petition, had challenged the state government’s decision to confine this year’s yatra to just a month instead of two months. The petitioner’s counsel pleaded that once the Amarnath Board took a decision of allowing the yatra for two months, the state government could not overrule the decision. Further, no reason was given by the state government in restricting the yatra to only one month, he said. The petition submitted that “unnecessary and unconstitutional interference” by the state government in the working of the board was “absolutely illegal and arbitrary”. The petition prayed for the direction to the respondents to extend the yatra for two months from July 2 to August 29 and also sought directions for the registration of yatris at Chandanwari and Baltal only.
