6 militants shot in J&K Srinagar, May 27 The police here said three militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Chansar, Kulgam in Anantnag district, today. They were identified as Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, Imtiaz Ahmad Wani and Gulzar Ahmad Ganai. The encounter took place when BSF troops and police personnel were cordoning off the area. The recoveries made included three AK rifles, six magazines, 141 rounds, one UBGL, one wireless set two RPG shells, one IED, 23 handgrenades, and Rs 35,000. Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Asham, Sumbal in Baramula district this morning. Two AK rifles, six magazines, 113 rounds, one UBGL and a wireless set were recovered from the site of the encounter. Meanwhile, militants shot dead Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, an ex-SPO at Kadlabal, Pampore in Pulwama district, last evening. A Nepalese resident was killed in an exchange of fire between militants and the security forces at Sheikhpora, Vilgam near Handwara in Kupwara district, last evening. He was identified as Haseeb Ansari of Kamkotran Ramnagar, Sansaran district, Nepal. Militants killed Mohammad Azeem in Harni sector of Poonch district last night after he was kidnapped from his house. The security forces recovered one AK rifle, four magazines and 120 rounds during searches at Bhagatpur, Puni Chank in Domana sector, Jammu district. Sources said the body of a militant was recovered from a gutted house at Neeligam Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara today. With this the toll in the encounter, which took place yesterday between militants and a search party, has risen to six-four soldiers, including a Major, a civilian and a militant. The operation was still going on, the sources said. Militants entered the house of former Special Police Officer Aijaz Ahmad Bhat at Kadlabal Pampore and shot him dead last night. Militants shot at and wounded Abdul Ahad Mugloo, a released militant at Beerwah while another person Manzoor Ahmad was injured at Reshipora Shopian last night. A police constable was injured in an encounter between the security forces and militants at Sonawari in Baramula last night. The security forces arrested a militant along with one handgrenade and two UBGLs at Chadoora in the central Kashmir district of Badgam. JAMMU: Terrorists beheaded Azim Din at Harmot village of Poonch on Thursday. Reports said the ultras belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit entered his house forcibly and committed the crime. Later, they also chopped off his arms. The terrorists suspected Azim Din of being police informer. The security forces on Thursday shot dead a militant in an encounter near Mendhar in Poonch district
Official sources said the security forces were carrying out searches in Dehri Jagal area of Mendhar when the militants fired at them. In the retaliatory fire the troops killed one militant. The operation was continuing in the area when reports last came in. Meanwhile, several mud houses were set ablaze allegedly by ultras in Dhamkund area of Udhampur district, official sources said on Thursday. A group of ultras active in upper areas of Asthanmarg in Dhamkund region of Udhampur set on fire partially-constructed “dhoks” of nomadic Gujjar and Bakerwal community on Tuesday, they said. |
65,000 visit Kheer Bhawani shrine Srinagar, May 27 Most of the devotees were from Jammu, Delhi and Mumbai. The devotees thronged the shrine even amid heavy rain in the morning. Long queues were seen at the entrance to the shrine till late in the afternoon. Flower petals were offered at the sanctum sanctorum of Mata Maha Ragyana at the centre of the holy spring under the shadow of chinar trees. Local
Muslims, both men and women, young and old, were seen selling
ratandeep, kand, venye, flower petals and milk offered by devotees at the shrine. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, the Minister of State for Industries, Mr Raman Mattoo, and their ministerial colleagues also visited the shrine and felicitated the devotees. They also prayed for peace in the state and early return of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the valley. |

suitcase causes panic on highway
Jammu, May 27 The area was cordoned off and all vehicles stopped after the briefcase was found on the roadside near Rani Talab at Nandini at 9.30 a.m. Police sources said a bomb disposal squad reached the scene and removed the briefcase. When it was opened, only clothes, a shaving kit and other items of daily use were found. Traffic was blocked on the highway for almost two hours. In another incident, the security forces recovered an AK series rifle buried in a field in Bhagatpur village in the Pounichak sub-sector here this morning. The police said farmers who were working in the fields, discovered the rifle and alerted the security forces. The weapon is believed to have been hidden in the field by militants who had infiltrated the area.

Kidnapped man’s skeleton found
Jammu, May 27 On the basis of an identity card found in the cave, police sources said the skeleton was that of Jan Mohammad, who was kidnapped by militants from his house at Arnas over a year ago. In another incident, the police found the body of a woman Shano Devi, hanging from a tree at Phangla near Katra. The Katra police has registered a case.

BSF IG gets new posting
Jammu, May 27 Mr Sharma, who is presently the IG (Provisioning) at the Frontier headquarters, replaces Mr Dilip Trivedi, who has been posted at the BSF Headquarters in New Delhi as IG (Provisioning), Deputy Commandant of the BSF K.S. Jha said.
