Alert in Panipat for anti-national
elements
Panipat, May 23 Police officials stayed in the rest house under assumed names and gave fake addresses. A senior functionary of the administration had helped the officials get rooms. This came to light when employees of the rest house became suspicious about the activities of the officials who had several instruments to tape phone calls. The employees then reported the matter to the CID wing of the state police to whom the police officials told that they were on a mission. When contacted Deputy Commissioner Balwan Singh, denied that any official of the administration had helped the Intelligence officials (police) to get a room in the rest house. Sources added that the police officials had stayed in the rest house as it was situated at a small distance from BSNL main tower in the city which might had helped them record telephonic conversation of suspected people. Sources said that the intelligence agency (police) wanted to trace persons involved in the smuggling of weapons in the city and ISI agents. Last year in December with the arrest of two ISI agents from Yamunanagar and Sonepat, intelligence agencies had been told to increase surveillance in sensitive areas. Panipat and Kerana in UP are believed to be the safest hideouts for ISI agents, criminals from neighbouring states and also centre of smuggled weapons. Repeated infiltration of criminals and weapons can be linked to the involvement of people in anti-national activities. Last month four youths had injured seriously two policemen and escaped carrying AK-47 and other weapons in a bag. They were said to be members of the ‘Tansir’ gang operating in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The sources added that the agency was also keeping watch on the illegal Bangladeshis employed in handloom industry in the city. The agency suspected that many Bangladeshis in the city involved in anti-national activities resemble with persons from West Bengal and work in handloom factories only and live under assumed names and had given fake addresses of West Bengal. The city had witnessed a blast in a bus at the bus stand, which killed seven persons in 1997. Another blast took place in the Muri Express in 1998 and in 1999 the police defused of an RDX bomb at Red Light Chowk. |
