The SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab got yet another shot in the arm with its nominee Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon winning the Ludhiana Parliamentary seat by 17,804 votes. He defeated the Congress nominee, Mr Manish Tewari.

Sarabha Nagar roads to get fresh surface
Ludhiana, May 13
The municipal corporation today took up the work for laying a premix carpet on the main roads in blocks A, B, E, F and G in Sarabha Nagar here at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. Though the project was approved earlier by the Finance and Contracts Committee, it could not be executed due to the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.

PNB to organise yoga camp

Punjab National Bank is organising a “yoga sadhna” and “yoga chikitsa shivir” from May 16 to 20 at Ram Darbar Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, Ludhiana, for the benefit of public.

Traders sore over suspension of parcel booking
Ludhiana, May 13
Industrialists and traders of the city are up in arms against the Railways for not booking the parcels following an order to this effect by the department. The Railway authorities, however, maintained that they were not booking the parcels in view of a circular in issued by the department, which had stated that the parcel booking should be suspended for sometime due to overcrowding of parcel orders in the stations.

The two-day exhibition put up by Rohini of Kaara of Daily City Centre Mall, Gurgaon, opened today at Ruby Hall of Hotel Mahraja Regency. The exhibits displayed showcase contemporary collection of chikankari ensembles. Chikan work is used imaginatively with block printing which looks very elegant.

Students of plus one and plus two of Atam Public Senior Secondary School participated in a one-act play competition here today. Six teams of students enacted a play each in English under the guidance of their teachers.

KCW girls shine in BCA exam
Ludhiana, May 13
Students of Khalsa College for Women grabbed five out of top 10 positions in the city in BCA III exam, the results of which were declared yesterday. The college maintained the tradition of obtaining 100 per cent result. Thirty six out of 40 girls got first division, and 20 girls got above 70 per cent marks.

GNIMT ties up with San Jose varsity

The Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, has tied up with San Jose State University (SJSU), California, USA, for higher education for its students.

Quiz on  traffic safety held
Ludhiana, May 13
Senior students of DAV Public School participated in a traffic safety quiz organised by TVS Scooty here today. Students of classes IX, X, plus one and plus two were given a written test of 50 multiple-choice questions on road safety. Among Class IX students, Gurkamalpreet Singh stood first, followed by Manish Kumar. Ankit Vats of Class X stood first while Saurabh Bajaj bagged the second prize.

Substandard drugs to be replaced
Ludhiana, May 13
The district health administration will replace substandard drugs and material supplied to government hospitals and dispensaries with those of good quality on need basis. Further, the alleged victimisation and favouritism regarding annual confidential reports (ACRs) of the previous year will be rectified and erring senior medical officers (SMOs), accused of demanding money, will be punished if found guilty in an inquiry.

Training programme on AIDS prevention

To increase awareness about the prevention and control of HIV (AIDS) among ESI beneficiaries, the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched a project with the collaboration of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).

Swimming meet on May 15, 16
Ludhiana, May 13
The district swimming championship for the sub-junior and junior boys and girls in the age groups of 15-17 years, 13-14 years, 11-12 years, 9-10 years and up to 8 years will be held at the local municipal corporation swimming pool on May 15 and 16, according to Mr Apinder Singh Grewal, president of the District Swimming Association.
