PAU holds camp on seed production

Amloh, May 13
A one-day camp on seed production was organised by Punjab Agricultural University in association with a progressive farmer, Balbir Singh Jarria, at his farm in Dharamgarh village, near here, yesterday.

Farmers of the area participated in the camp. It was stressed that instead of purchasing seeds from various sources, the farmers could produce these themselves after following the guidelines laid down by the university. They were told that they could not only produce seeds for their own requirement but also supply it to other farmers of the area, helping them raise their income and bring down the expenses on farming inputs.

Students stage one-act plays

Ludhiana, May 13
Students of plus one and plus two of Atam Public Senior Secondary School participated in a one-act play competition here today.
Six teams of students enacted a play each in English under the guidance of their teachers. The novel feature of the event was that the plays were a dramatisation of stories from their course books.

Prof S.C. Jain, retired Professor of English from SCD Government College, and Ms Jeeja, Head of the Department of Science in the school, were as judges. The first prize was awarded to the team which performed “Monday morning”. The second prize went to the team that presented “Swami and his father”. The third prize was won by the team that dramatised the story, “The diamond necklace”.

Shilpa was declared the best actress, followed by Jaswinder and Priyanka. The best narrators were Kritika for “Swami and his father” and Payal for “Monday morning”. Prof S.C. Jain gave a critical appreciation of plays. Ms Usha S. Jain, Principal, was present on the occasion.

KCW girls shine in BCA exam

Ludhiana, May 13
Students of Khalsa College for Women grabbed five out of top 10 positions in the city in BCA III exam, the results of which were declared yesterday. The college maintained the tradition of obtaining 100 per cent result. Thirty six out of 40 girls got first division, and 20 girls got above 70 per cent marks.

Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal Khalsa College, praised the students and college’s Department of Computer Science. She said the college students had got rewards for their hard work and that she felt proud of her achievers for bringing laurels to the college.

Sheetal Goel stood first in the city securing 80.42 per cent marks. Among other toppers, Nagma Jain secured 78.42 per cent, Meenu Gupta 77.63 per cent, Isha Jain 77.08 per cent and Kusum China 76.21 per cent marks.

Devki College girls excel: Devki Devi Jain Memorial College for Women has got 100 per cent result in BCA-III examination of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Shivani Anand grabbed first position in the college by securing 76.4 per cent, Shikha Jain came second with 75.5 and Parminder Kaur third with 75.2 per cent marks. More than 50 per cent students secured above 70 per cent marks.

The college Principal, Ms Usha Mani, said the students had sound knowledge of software development, as college had its own software development cell, where these students had worked on live projects along with their studies.

10-day NSS camp: Volunteers of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, are attending a 10-day NSS camp, which started on May 11, on the college premises.

The college Principal, Ms Charanjit Mahal, welcomed the volunteers and talked of the significance of participating in such camps for personality development, confidence building, and their contribution towards the development and improvement of society. Around 100 volunteers are taking part in the camp.

NSS camp at SDP College: The NSS Department of SDP College for Women has organised a 10-day NSS camp on the college campus. During the camp, NSS volunteers have undertaken a drive to clean the college and surrounding areas, besides organising medical check-up of students and inhabitants of Quila Mohalla. Extension lectures on AIDS, empowerment of women, balanced diet, personality development, drinking water and pollution problem etc. are also being held.

Hobby classes, pot painting, soft-toys making, cooking, food and preservation, mehandi, purposeful use of waste material will also be organised.

Medical camp: A medical camp was organised at Gurdwara Gur Sagar, Salim Tabri, by NSS volunteers of Master Tara Singh Memorial College here today. The camp was part a 10-day NSS camp that started on May 11.

The Chief Medical Officer helped organise the camp. The volunteers surveyed the localities for two days and spread awareness on dental and eye problems.

Dr Mahajan, a dentist, and Dr Bagga along with their teams examined the patients. During the camp, the volunteers would learn about traffic rules, pollution control etc.

GNIMT ties up with San Jose varsity

The Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, has tied up with San Jose State University (SJSU), California, USA, for higher education for its students.

An agreement in this regard has been signed by Dr A.S. Bansal, GNIMT Director, and Dr M. Novak, Associate Vice-President, International and Extended Studies, SJSU, in the US.

Students with a four-year bachelor degree or those in their final year of a postgraduate programme after the 10+2+3 system would be eligible for admission to postgraduate programmes in the US.

Dr Bansal said GNIMT students could benefit from the tie-up even during the final year as they would be exempted from 20 or 25 per cent of course work and would benefit in terms of tuition fee as well as duration. A student from the MCA stream could complete an MS in computer and software engineering in one year and then work for one-year paid training.

Before finalising the agreement, Dr Bansal and Mr G.S. Sarna, Joint Secretary of GNIMT, had visited the campus and studied the facilities available at SJSU, financial implications and other adaptations that the students would have to make. Prior to this, Prof Novok and Prof Meldal from SJSU, along with Mr Jaswinder Singh Saini from the US, had visited GNIMT during its convocation.

Quiz on traffic safety held

Senior students of DAV Public School participated in a traffic safety quiz organised by TVS Scooty here today.
Students of classes IX, X, plus one and plus two were given a written test of 50 multiple-choice questions on road safety. Among Class IX students, Gurkamalpreet Singh stood first, followed by Manish Kumar. Ankit Vats of Class X stood first while Saurabh Bajaj bagged the second prize.

Rajat Sharma stood first among participants of plus one, followed by Sucheta Puri. Tushar stood first and Jasmeet Kaur was declared second among participants from plus two.

Mr Naresh Goswami, Director, Zoom Media Vision, said such a competition would be held in 500 schools of Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur and Bathinda. Tomorrow, a similar contest would be held at Government Senior Secondary School, near Division No. 3, he added.
