For the first time, perhaps, in Punjab's election history the Government of India is sending at least 39 special observers to the state for counting purposes.

Ex-servicemen pledge support to Congress

The Indian Exservices League (Punjab and Chandigarh) has decided to support Congress candidates from Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Gurdaspur,
Ferozepore, Faridkot and Bathinda constituencies. This was stated by the president of the league, Lieut Col Chanan Singh Dhillon, here today.
Lieut-Col Dhillon said the league held membership of nearly five lakh veterans
and constituted a vote bank of nearly 2.5 million.

Woman dies of diarrhoea, 100 ill

One woman died of diarrhoea and about 100 persons were suffering from the disease after consuming contaminated water in three localities, Sukhchainpura, Himmatpura and Balmiki bastis, in Jaito in this district during the past three days. Patients assaulted; staff observe strike

Staff members, including doctors of the Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, observed a strike from 8.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. today in protest against an attack by some anti-social elements on two patients and their attendants in the emergency ward of the hospital and their misbehaviour towards the staff, including a doctor, last night.

Bag containing Rs 4.5 lakh
stolen from car
Patiala, May 8
A bag containing Rs 4.5 lakh and vital documents was stolen from a car parked in the crowded Choti Baradari area today. Dr Samarpal Singh and his wife, Dr Prabhjot Kaur, were shocked when they found that a bundle of cash lying in their car had been stolen. However, another bundle, containing Rs 50,000, was not stolen.
The couple, who had come from Noida in the morning, were scheduled to leave for
Canada on May 14. The theft took place in front of the LIC office. A case has
been registered by the police.
