CASE SOLVED: The police here claimed solving a case of abduction Amit Prasad SSP said here on Friday that police recovered Malkiat Singh and Sarbjit Kaur from a hotel in Indore. Their parents have complaint to the police that they had been missing.

Quiz:
Students from the primary wing of New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, participated in a quiz on Saturday. Four teams from different houses, represented by three students each, participated in the contest. The teams consisted of students from Classes II to V. The contest was based on questions from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The first prize winner of the round was Monika Sharma, Tanvi Sharma and Amarbir Singh from the Tagore House. The second prize went to the team of Sandeep, Ankush and Manpreet Kaur from the Nehru House. The function was presided over by the Deputy Director, Mr H.C. Gupta. He congratulated the winners and gave away prizes to them.

Fancy dress show: Students of Jain Public Senior Secondary School, Benjamin Road, participated in a fancy dress contest on Friday. Nearly 50 students of Classes Nursery to III took part in the contest. Mr S.K. Kalra, Principal, Mr Desh Bandhu Gupta and Mr Ashok Gupta, members of the committee, were present on the occasion.

Seminar: A seminar on effective public speaking was organised by the Indians Junior Chambers Zone at GMT Senior Secondary Public School on Saturday. Following the seminar, a contest on public speaking was held in which Babita Kalsi of Class XII and Kiranjot of Class XI won the first and the second prize. The directors, Mr S.K.S. Thind and Mr S.J.S. Thind, and Ms Heema Jassal, Principal, appreciated the efforts of the winners.

Students’ council: Students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, elected members of their council on Friday. Students had filed nominations for head boy, head girl, secretary, house captains, vice-captains and prefects from Classes III to XII. The candidates were allotted time for canvassing to garner support. Finally, Abhiraj Sandhu, Samridhi Bhuria, Kunal Chawla and Steffi Kalra were chosen head boy, head girl, sports captain (boys) and sports captain (girls), respectively, in the primary school cabinet. Jivtesh Singh Aulakh, Shireen Bhatt and Varsha Srivastva were elected head boy, head girl and secretary in the senior school cabinet.

Scooterist hurt
: Ashok Kumar, 50, a resident of Chhatti Gali, Jagraon, who was going on a scooter (PB-10-AA-1769), was hit by a bus (Pb-29-A-9645) near Dalip filling station on the GT Road on Saturday. The bus belonged to the Sewak Bus Service. He was seriously injured and was taken to the Civil Hospital from where he was referred him to the DMCH, Ludhiana. The driver of the bus managed to flee from the spot.

ARRESTED: The local police on Friday arrested Nek Singh of Suraj Nagar, Moga, and recovered a working still and three quintals of lahan from his possession. One of his accomplice Charat Singh is absconding. The police has registered a case against them and they are being interrogated.

Procession: Hundreds of three wheeler and rickshaw puller owners from all over the district on Friday took out a procession in favour of Congress candidate Kiran Kaur Brar, daughter-in-law of former Governor of Punjab Harcharan Singh Brar, who they said was contesting election from constituency.

Inaugurated: With the installation of the Lasik Laser machine at the Ophthalmology Department on Saturday, the PGI became the first public sector hospital in North West India to offer this facility to the patients. The Union Health Secretary, Mr J.V.R. Prasada Rao inaugurated a state-of-the-art Lasik Laser Centre for vision correction in the Ophthalmology Department at the New OPD Block in PGI. With vision correction being one of the fastest emerging speciality, the technology has advanced features with tissue saving algorithm to correct high refractive errors. Mr Rao, also visited the under construction Advanced Eye Centre.

HOLIDAY: Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Subhasheesh Panda said here on Friday that May 10 would be a paid holiday for all government and non-government establishments due to voting.

THREE SENTENCED: A fast-track Court here has sentenced Kanshi Ram, Sushil Kumar and Vijay Kumar, residents of Thandol village under Palampur police station to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs 5,000 to each and 10 years’ jail and fine of Rs 10,000 to each under Section 307 of the IPC for attacking Dinesh Kumar with sharp-edged weapons.

ACCIDENT: Sonu (25) was killed on the spot and Roop Lal (50) was injured seriously when a private bus hit their motorcycle Hathli Khaud bridge in the Hamirpur town on Saturday. The bus was going from Barsar to Hamirpur. The injured has been admitted to a Hamirpur hospital.

BAN ON LIQUOR’S SALE: The District Magistrate here for peaceful Lok Sabha Elections has ordered ban on the sale of liquor from 5 p.m. on May 8 to 5 p.m on May 10 and May 13 has also been declared dry day in all five Assembly segments of district.
