Rules, code violated in MC posting: BJP
Ludhiana, May 6
The posting orders of the Principal Secretary, Local Government Department, Punjab, giving additional charge of Superintending Engineer (SE), Municipal Corporation, here to Mr Manmohan Singh, who is serving on the same post in the Ludhiana Improvement Trust here, has sparked off a controversy.

Vajpayee coming to city on May 8
Ludhiana, May 6
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will address an election rally in Ludhiana on May 8 in a last-minute bid to boost the election prospects of SAD-BJP nominees in Punjab. Announcing this here today, Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, SAD-BJP candidate for the Ludhiana parliamentary seat, said the Prime Minister’s visit would consolidate votes in favour of alliance nominees across the state.

Tiwari flays NDA over disinvestment
Ludhiana, May 6
Making a fervent appeal to the electorate to vote in favour of the Congress so that a government headed by Ms Sonia Gandhi could take over the reins at the Centre, the party candidate from Ludhiana, Mr Manish Tiwari, on Tuesday castigated the NDA government for its disinvestment policy, under which many profit-making public sector units were passed on to private hands at throwaway prices.

SAD will win, claims Gill
Doraha, May 6
“BJP-SAD activists of Payal, Malout and Doraha reached out to the rural folk of 100 villages of this area four times during the campaign, while other parties could not meet these villagers even once during the same period. In every visit, we have added to our strength by gaining support for the joint alliance,” said Mr Jagjiwan Pal Singh Gill, an Akali activist and in charge of the Payal constituency.

Seeking votes in Tohra’s name
Amloh, May 6
Former minister Harmail Singh Tohra son-in-law of late SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra, presented a siropa to a former vice-president of the Amloh block of the Congress, who left the party along with his supporters and joined the SAD today in a function at Bhadal Thua village, near here. District with senior vice-president of the SAD Brij Lal Sharma presented Rs 21,000 for the election fund to the former minister.

Women not to vote for candidates ‘supplying’ drugs

Women in Punjab will not vote in favour of those candidates who distribute drugs during elections. These views were expressed at an opinion survey of women voters on “Drug distribution during elections”.

Ludhiana, May 6
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma today said the Election Commission had ordered that all voters who had been issued voter identity cards would have to produce these to exercise their franchise at polling stations.

“Gar ho sake to ab koi shama jalaye, is daure siyast ka andhera mitayee.” This was the opening line of 36 members of the Youth Aman Karwan, who on the last leg of their whirlwind tour were in the city today. Youth in the age group of 15 to 20 years comprised the group. Their aim is to visit 40 cities in the country before election to make people aware of the urgency the country is facing.

2 mishap victims’ condition critical
Ludhiana, May 6
The condition of two students of Guru Harkrishan Public School, Dugri Road, who met with an accident at the unmanned railway crossing near Himmat Nagar yesterday was still critical today even as other children have started showing signs of improvement. Nisha Rani, a student of class VI, is lying unconscious in the neurosurgery ward of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. She had received injuries on the head, ears and under the eyes.

Club general secretary reinstated
Ludhiana, May 6
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, who is also the ex-officio president of the Satluj Club, has revoked the suspension of club general secretary, Mr Gurinderjit Singh Laadi and the bar secretary, Mr Rajeev Malhotra. Orders to this effect were issued yesterday.

Manmohan assures steel consumers

Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today assured the engineering industry, particularly the steel consumers, that if the Congress came to power at the Centre, it would ensure that the rising prices of the steel were brought under control.

PAU releases tests’ schedule
Ludhiana, May 6
Punjab Agricultural University has released the schedule of entrance tests for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the forthcoming academic session.

NAAC awards A+ grade to A.S. College
Khanna, May 6
The local A.S. College has been awarded A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. It is the only college of Panjab University which achieved this status. Out of 1,430 colleges, only 18 have been awarded A+ grade. This was claimed by Mr T. R. Bahia, Principal of the college, at a press conference here today.

Ludhiana, May 6
Ludhiana lads set a daunting task before Amritsar, scoring a mammoth total of 378 runs in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (under-17) for the ML Markan Trophy at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College ground here today.
