In an incident unprecedented in this parliamentary constituency, the city Mayor, Ms Kamlesh, was today booked for attempting to bribe voters and trying to influence them.

Police holds flag march ahead of poll

The Chandigarh police today took out a flag march in the outer areas of the city to ensure free and fair elections on May 10. All DSPs, SHOs and around 300 personnel started off from the police headquarters in Sector 9 and passed through colonies and villages.

Citing the ongoing tussle between Judges and the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, some respondents in the ongoing case of alleged irregularities in the allotment of land to some influential persons today asked the Bench headed by the Chief Justice not to hear the case.

70-year-old man crushed to death
Chandigarh, May 6
A 70-year-old retired schoolteacher was today crushed to death under a truck on the Sector 29, 30, 31 and 32 roundabout. Anup Singh, a resident of Sawara village in Kharar, was riding a moped when it hit a truck from the rear. He lost balance and was crushed under the rear wheels of the truck.

4 booked for illegal possession of liquor
Chandigarh, May 6
Four persons were tonight booked for illegal possession of liquor by a special raiding party constituted for ensuring free and fair elections on May 10. Two persons from Ram Darbar, one from Sector 25 and one from Daddu Majra Colony were arrested by seven raiding parties.

Mr Pawan Bansal, Congress nominee for ensuing Lok Sabha elections, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of stage-managing the so-called peace initiative with Pakistan for garnering Muslim votes at the cost of national security. He said a study of series of events from the day of terrorist attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001 till the announcement of general elections revealed that the BJP government compromised national interests in order to serve its political goals.

Voters’ minds made up for BJP, claims Mahajan

The opinion poll released yesterday has strongly indicated that people have made up their mind in favour of the local Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, Mr Satya pal Jain, said Mr Yash Pal Mahajan, president of the local unit.

BSP to work for statehood for city
Chandigarh, May 6
The Bahujan Samaj Party has announced to work for carving out status of independent statehood for the city. This forms a part of the party election manifesto released here today. Mr Balbir Jhangra, president of the local unit of the BSP, while releasing the manifesto, said keeping in mind the heavy increase in the city population, houses constructed outside the “lal dora” limits of villages need to be regularised.

Panic gripped the Gynaecology Ward of the GMCH, Sector 32, when the police received information that a bomb had been planted in the ward. A team of the Chandigarh Police, sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squad immediately reached the hospital and dispersed patients queued up at the OPD.
