Chandigarh, May 1
A cell separator machine was inaugurated in the Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion in Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital here by the Director-Principal, Prof H.M. Swami. A seminar was also organised.

According to the department’s acting head, Dr Sabita Basu, the machine will enable the removal of only the desired blood component like platelets, red cells or plasma from the donor, unlike the usual procedure where whole blood was removed from the donor.

This, she added, would improve the safety and efficacy of blood transfusion. At the same time it would minimise the unwanted effects seen with blood transfusion. The state-of-the-art equipment, based on modern technology and presently available at very few transfusion centers in the country. She added that for “updating the technology of blood components”, a seminar was being organised with the prime object of highlighting the significance of using a single donor’s blood for a number of patients requiring specific components according to their individual requirements.

About a 100 delegates from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and city participated in the seminar. Addressing the gathering, three experts, Dr R.N. Makroo of Delhi, Dr R.R. Sharma of PGIMER and Dr R. Deshpande of Mumbai, highlighted the significance of the machines. Dr J.G. Jolly, meanwhile, complimented the Director-Principal and other faculty members for installing the machine expeditiously.
