Loan scam unearthed
300 farmers duped by coop society secy
Nangal (Ropar), April 30
Mohinder Kaur, a poor resident of Bhalri village, near Nangal, took a short-term loan of Rs 10,000 from the Bhalri Koa Agri Service Society of which she is a member, about a year ago. She kept depositing the loan instalments with the secretary of the society.

Rain, hailstorm damage cotton crop,

Bathinda, April 30
Heavy rain, hailstorm and strong wind, lashed the region today afternoon, damaging recently sown cotton crop on thousands of acres. It also damaged wheat in purchase centres, uprooted trees apart from throwing life out of gear.

Badal for CBI probe into Bathinda

Mr Parkash Singh Badal, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal has demanded a CBI probe into the reasons behind the refinery work stopping in Bathinda. He criticised Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister Punjab, for his role towards this prestigious project.

CM favours direct export of wheat to Pakistan

Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, today favoured direct export of wheat from Punjab to Pakistan. He said, while it was wheat from Punjab which was being sold in Pakistan for a hefty price, the farmers of Punjab were not even getting the marginal price.

A group of 178 Muslims from Pakistan, belonging to the Zehrin sect, which reached Attari yesterday by Samjhauta Express on week-long pilgrimage to Kalria Mosque in Roorki boarded other train only after the release of a member of the group, Mr Mohammad Khalid, a resident of Lahore, who was arrested by the General Railways Police on the charge of possessing counterfeit Indian currency notes.

Some teachers of private, government-aided colleges of Punjab have challenged the directive of the Election Commission directing them to perform election duty.

Grewal is district Bar president
Bathinda, April 30
Mr Hardev Singh Grewal today defeated Mr Lakhwinder Singh Dhillon for the post of president of the District Bar Association, Bathinda. Mr Grewal polled 216 votes, while Mr Dhillon got 198 votes. The third contestant, Mr Sukhdarshan Sharma, secured only 94 votes.

3 killed, 22 hurt in mishaps
Sangrur, April 30
Three persons, including a minor girl, were killed in three accidents in the Sangrur, Sunam and Longowal areas in the past 24 hours. Twenty-two persons were also injured in a mishap.

Indonesian woman complains against former husband
Amritsar, April 30
An Indonesian woman has filed a complaint with the Sultanwind police against Onkar Singh and his wife allegedly for detaining her son illegally. The police has registered a case under Sections 344, 365 of the IPC against the two.

JE booked on rape charge
Moga, April 30
The Kotwali police, Faridkot, yesterday registered a case against a Junior Engineer of the Health Department for allegedly raping an employee of Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, after forcibly entering the victim’s residence about 10 days back.

Maid servant held on charge of attempt to murder
Amritsar, April 30
The Civil Line police has arrested a 15-year-old maid servant, Rinki, a resident of the Faizpura area here, for allegedly trying to kill her employers family by mixing some poisonous substance in their meal on Wednesday.

Out-of-format question paper set right
Bathinda, April 30
Students of BSc (first year) of Punjabi University Patiala, were in for a rude shock today when they learnt that their Chemistry question paper had not been set as per guidelines. Information gathered by TNS revealed that thousands of students appeared in the examination at various Centres in Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur and Patiala.

GND varsity exams postponed
Amritsar, April 30
Guru Nanak Dev University here today announced the postponement of the annual and semester examinations scheduled to be held from May 8 to 14 in view of the Lok Sabha elections.
