Newspaper hawker strangled to death

A 70-year-old newspaper hawker Hari Singh was today found strangled to death in a ransacked bedroom of his house in Sector 30-B. The head had blood stains, according to the police.

Bank draft fraud detected
Chandigarh, April 20
A gang of six persons tried to defraud city banks by presenting demand drafts worth Rs 1.25 crore stolen from the strong room of the Union Bank of India, Sector 40, in March 2003.

The R.S. Gupta committee, which was probing the Burail jailbreak incident, has suggested that a new prison complex should be built and the jail staff of Delhi and Chandigarh should be clubbed. The staff should be trained in modern methods and inspection formats should be laid down.

BIS gold-testing lab at Mohali soon

The Bureau of Indian Standards, which was till now certifying the purity of gold objects only for the seven jewellers holding the “hallmark” licence in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, will also be testing and certifying these gold objects for the common man.

3 Bengal tigers sterilized

Jimmy, Sanjay and Shsiami-three adult male Royal Bengal tigers - were vasectomised in a makeshift ‘operation theatre’, at the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, on the Chansdigarh-Patiala highway, 20 km from Chandigarh, today.

Vets reject meat for zoo animals
Chhat Bir, April 20
A panel of zoo veterinary doctors today rejected about 32 kgs of buffalo meat being supplied by a Saharnpur-based meat contractor to the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park for its carnovors. This the second time when the zoo doctors have rejected the meat supply.

Small saving agents honoured

Highlighting the role of women in building national economy by generating household savings through “Mahila Pradhan Agency of National Savings”, Nagpur-based Deputy National Savings Commissioner S.K. Tripathi today revealed that the net collections in the small saving schemes had risen from Rs 30.48 crore in 1948-49 to Rs 50,500 crore in 2002-03.

Cash, jewellery stolen
Kharar, April 20
Cash totalling more than Rs 15,000 and jewellery were stolen from a house here today. It is reported that a theft took place in a house near Gurdwara Akali Daftar when Mr Kuldeep Singh and his wife had gone out for work and the former’s mother went out to see the Khalsa Chetna March which was passing through the town.
