Health Dept seeks NGO help

Expressing concern at the female foeticide, the Director-General of Health Services, Dr B.S. Dahiya, today appealed to the medical fraternity and the NGOs to help the Health Department in the implementation of the PNDT Act.

Speaking at a workshop on the sex-determination and female foeticide here, Dr Dahiya said the department had “sealed” 40 ultrasound machines,which were illegally used for sex-determination. As many as 783 ultrasound machines were registered in the state, he added.

Answering to a question, Dr Dahiya said 5,000 couples had been registered under the Devirupak Scheme, of which 250 had already benefited.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Satbir Chaudhary, said while 32 ultrasound machines had been registered in the district, the registration of five ultrasound clinics had been cancelled for indulging in illegal sex-determination and female foeticide.

Over 40 doctors, who attended the workshops, were informed about various provisions of the PNDT Act.

Sports bodies for COA affiliation

The Chandigarh Badminton Association, the Chandigarh Netball Association, the Chandigarh Karate Association and the Chandigarh Cycle Polo Association have been recommended for affiliation with the Chandigarh Olympic Association (COA). A sub-committee for this purpose has been appointed by the COA

The Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association has also been recommended for affiliation due to its performance and activities carried out throughout the year.

The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association (CACA), headed by Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, has been asked to submit a letter from the Cycling Federation of India, affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), beside a list of the affiliated units of the CACA.

The sub-committee has also sought clarifications from the Chandigarh Amateur Powerlifting Association, the Chandigarh Wushu Association, the Chandigarh Taekwondo Association, the Chandigarh Bowling Association, the Chandigarh Korfball Association and the Chandigarh Softball Association. After receiving the required documents, their cases will be considered.

Mr Jagbir Singh, convener of the sub-committee, said a general criteria had been formulated to consider the applications for affiliation with the apex sports body of the state. The first criterion was that the National Sports  Federation must be affiliated to the IOA.

The association must submit a list of activities and the balance sheet of the past three years and its affiliated units.

The sub-committee held its meeting in the office of the COA secretary-general in DAV Senior Secondary Schools, Sector 8. As the chairman of the sub-committee for affiliation, Col T S Dhillon could not attend the meeting, the convener, Mr Jagbir Singh, presided over. Other members who attended the meeting included the secretary-general of the COA, Mr Ravinder Talwar, Mr R. Sharan and Mr Maha Singh.

17-year-old Nitin returns 7-under card

Seventeen-year-old Nitin Mittal returned the lowest ever card of seven under (65) during the monthly medal round played at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Sunday.

Nitin achieved the impossible by scoring birdies on the second, fourth, sixth, ninth, 12th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes.
