PDP harassing Cong men: Parray
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, April 16
The Congress has accused its ruling alliance partner, the PDP, of harassing its workers and removing party banners and posters in Baramula constituency, which will go to the polls in the first phase on Tuesday next. The candidates of the Congress and PDP are pitted against one another in the constituency. However, the contest that had been termed as a “friendly”, one is turning out to be an unfriendly one.

Addressing a press conference at the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters here this afternoon, the party spokesman alleged that its workers and supporters in Baramula and Kupwara districts were being harassed by the police and other government employees on the instance of the ruling party leaders. “Our banners and posters are being removed”, the party spokesman, Mr Muzaffar Parray, told mediapersons.

He held that the SHO of Pattan in Baramula district, who happened to be the son-in-law of PDP MLA Mohammad Sultan Pandipuri was supporting the move for the removal of banners. He added that a vehicle was being used for the purpose in the area so that the message of the Congress did not reach the common man. Mr Parray held that this was because of the growing popularity of the Congress candidate, Mr Ghulam Rasool Kar, in the area. He also referred to the similar role being played by police officers in Sogam, Kupwara and Sopore areas for extending support to PDP candidate Nizamuddin Bhat.

The Congress spokesman also blamed senior PDP leaders, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and Ghulam Hassan Mir for “using abusive language against the Congress and circulating fabricated stories” against the party.

Replying to questions the Congress spokesman said the recent controversy between two ministers — Taj Mohiuddin of the Congress and Muzaffar Hussain Beigh of the PDP — involved differences only at the individual levels. He denied that the party had anything to say about the allegations made by Taj Mohiuddin against Mr Beigh over the grenade attack in Uri. Taj Mohiuddin represents Uri Assembly constituency, while it is also the hometown of Mr Beigh. Taj Mohiuddin had blamed the PDP for the killings at Uri on Wednesday saying that eight out of the 12 killed had died during firing by security guards of Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh.

Drawing the battlelines with the PDP its ruling alliance partner, the Congress spokesman said the party was not happy with the recent retrenchment of over 25,000 ad hoc employees. He added that it was against the promises made by the PDP at the time of the last Assembly elections.

Referring to the role of the National Conference especially during the riots in Gujarat when the party was an ally of the NDA government at the Centre, the Congress spokesman said it was disappointing. He held that the NC did not play its role even as massacre of members of a particular community took place in Gujarat under the BJP government. He expressed concern over the negligent role of the former NC MP from Baramula, Abdul Rasheed Shaheen, who is seeking re-election this time.

Young voters grapple with voter lists in Urdu
Tribune News Service

Jammu, April 16
The electoral rolls for the Lok Sabha elections in Urdu have become a major problem for the youth particularly in the Jammu and the Udhampur constituencies.

Most of the young voters in the two constituencies have not read Urdu and have to seek help of some persons knowing Urdu to locate their names in the voter lists.

A functionary of the Election Office, however, said the electoral rolls had been printed in Urdu as it was the official language of J&K. However, these lists have simultaneously been printed in Hindi in three of the 14 districts of the state, including Jammu, Udhampur and Kathua.

However, the voters have complained that only the lists published in Urdu have been displayed in the electoral offices. The voter slips being delivered in every household in the old city were also in Urdu, they claimed.

A migrant at Devipur camp, Yashpal, said young boys and girls were facing difficulty in finding their names in the electoral rolls. They had faced the same problem during the Assembly elections in 2002.

In the other 11 districts, the electoral rolls have been printed only in Urdu. However, the quality of printing of the lists in Urdu is better this time as these have been printed with laser technique.

This time the total number of voters is 63,76,872 and out of these 29,04,736 are female voters. As many as 11,500 electronic voting machines will be used in the six Lok Sabha constituencies.

Jammu, April 16
Efforts made by a group of supporters of the People’s Conference leaders Mr Bilal Ahmed Lone and Mr Sajjad Ahmed Lone to bring about a reconciliation between the two have not yielded any result forcing even the APHC (Abbas) leaders to remain on the sidelines.

The differences between the two brothers had also forced a split in the party, which had pockets of influence in Baramula and Kupwara districts of the Kashmir valley.

The responsibility of running the Peoples’ Conference had fallen on the shoulders of the two brothers after their father, Mr Abdul Gani Lone, founder of the party, was killed at a congregation in Idgah a year ago.

The two parted company when Mr Sajjad Lone objected to the participation of Kashmir Mirwaiz, Maulvi Umar Farooq, during the last rites of Al Umar commander, Farooq, who was killed in an operation by the security forces four months ago.

Sajjad had made an issue of it in the meeting of the APHC (Abbas). He, later, quit the separatist conglomerate despite attempts by APHC leaders to persuade him to stay.

Mr Bilal Lone stayed in the amalgam after the formal split in the Peoples’ Conference.

The two brothers are living in separate houses. While the younger brother, Mr Sajjad Lone, has occupied the main house in Rawalpora colony along with his mother, Mr Bilal Lone, lives in an adjacent house which too had been purchased by them and was earlier being used as party office.

The Chairman of the APHC, Maulvi Abbas Ansari, told this correspondent today that “for the time being I have no plan of mediating between the two brothers.”

He said in the recent past attempts had been made to bring the two brothers together but without any success. He said “I am watching the situation and I do not find that there is immediate scope for a reconciliation.”

NC chief predicts coalition govt’s fall
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, April 16
National Conference president Omar Abdullah has said that fissures in the coalition government had come out in the open with two senior ministers of the Congress and the PDP criticising policies of each other’s parties regarding recent attack on the PDP rally in Uri. He added that even PDP president Mehbooba Mufti blamed the Congress for the Uri killings.

Minister for Food and Supplies, Taj Mohiuddin of the Congress party, who represents Uri constituency, here yesterday levelled serious charges against the PDP. He claimed that eight of the 12 persons killed in the incident died following firing by the security guards of Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh of the PDP. The PDP leader, Mr Beigh had dismissed the charges and said that these were a figment of the imagination of Mr Taj Mohiuddin.

Addressing election rallies here yesterday, Mr Abdullah said the coalition would fall soon because of inherent contradictions within the partners who were bound not by ideological convictions but by the lust for power. Mr Abdullah said the Mufti government because of internal bickerings had provided the state with the worst ever governance.
